Probation Officer

POSITION TITLE: Probation Officer

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Court Administrator, the Probation Officer will be responsible for monitoring and supervising individuals on probation to ensure compliance with court-ordered conditions and promote community safety under the Santa Ana Tribal Court’s jurisdiction.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and supervise adult and juvenile offenders under the Santa Ana Tribal Court’s jurisdiction.
  • Building community relationships with the agencies, community resources to support the rehabilitation of reintegration of probationers.
  • Investigate and report caseloads to ensure compliance with court-ordered conditions.
  • Access offender needs and refers them to treatment programs for mental health, substance abuse, education and community service work programs.
  • Interprets laws, court orders, ordinances, rules and regulation related to offenders.
  • Conducts investigations when required, obtains evidence, and prepares reports
  • Attends court hearings and prepares pre-disposition reports on progress.
  • Prepares and submits violations, discharges, motions for court-imposed conditions.
  • Supervises random drug and alcohol testing and maintains equipment.
  • Compiles and submits monthly and quarterly reports within required timelines.
  • Appears in court proceedings, testifies regarding the progress or violations of probationers.
  • Maintain detailed, up-to-date case files, database entries, and documentation for court hearings.
  • Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required, and the employe will remain on call for emergencies.
  • Serves as a liaison with school administration, tribal officials, tribal Social Services and services providers.
  • Perform other duties; and a variety of court-related assignments when assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, business administration, or a related field; two years of progressive experience in probation work, counseling or

equivalent combination of education and experience. Must complete Defensive Tactics and Restraint Courses within one year of hire, as well as being certified as a Probation Officer. Must be able to successfully pass a re-employment drug/alcohol screen, background and fingerprinting investigation, including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable under the Pueblo’s insurance.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Certifications:

  • Knowledge of probation officer duties and public relations practices.
  • Knowledge of courtroom practices and procedures.
  • Ability to give and receive orders, follow instructions in verbal and written format.
  • Knowledge of service of court documents, including subpoenas and restraining orders.
  • Knowledge of Santa Ana Pueblo traditions, language, history, culture and values.
  • Knowledge of Santa Ana Tribal Law and Order Code, and applicable state and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to perform all essentials duties of a probation officer.
  • Ability to supervise client and enforce court-order conditions.
  • Skill in physically subduing individuals in the courtroom and during transport.
  • Skill in filing and processing records using automated and manual systems.
  • Skill in interpreting, applying and monitoring compliance with complex probation/parole conditions.
  • Skill in using personal computers and various software applications.
  • Ability to become certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • Must be of good moral character with no felony or moral-turpitude convictions.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and communicate effectively. The employee is occasionally required to sit and may be required to taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.


Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in an office environment with moderate noise level; however, situation requiring extreme caution may arise when contacting individuals in their homes. Employee must be willing to work with offenders who exhibit high-risk behaviors and require intervention or services, as well as individuals who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol otherwise in a destressed state.
