Key Roles and Responsibilities
Process Development and Design
- Evaluating Data: Analyzing research and pilot plant data to design and scale-up commercial processes.
- Mass & Energy Balances: Preparing detailed heat and material balances (H&MB) using both manual calculations and process simulation software (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, Plus)
- Developing Schematics: Creating essential engineering documents:
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs): High-level diagrams showing major equipment and stream flows.
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs): Detailed schematics defining piping, equipment, and instrumentation for process control
2. Equipment Specification and Sizing
- Equipment Sizing: Performing detailed calculations to determine the size and specifications for all process equipment (e.g., reactors, columns, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors) and utility systems.
- Data Sheets: Preparing process datasheets for mechanical equipment and instruments, providing required operating parameters and materials of construction.
- Vendor Interaction: Interfacing with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)/vendors for equipment selection and procurement.
3. Economic and Project Planning
- Cost Estimation: Preparing rough cost estimates (e.g., Rough Order of Magnitude) and production cost estimates to assess the financial viability of the proposed process.
- Financial Evaluation: Working with economic evaluation teams to establish payout and overall financial economics.
- Plant Layout: Participating in plant layout planning to ensure efficient, safe, and logical arrangement of equipment.
4. Safety, Compliance, and Optimization
- Risk Assessment: Leading or participating in process safety reviews like HAZOP (Hazard and Operability studies) to identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Compliance: Ensuring designs comply with industry standards, specifications, relevant codes, and Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) requirements.
- Troubleshooting: Providing technical support and troubleshooting expertise during the construction, pre-commissioning, startup, and commissioning phases of the plant.
- Process Optimization: Continuously looking for opportunities to optimize processes to reduce costs, increase efficiency, minimize waste, and improve product quality.
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs): High-level diagrams showing major equipment and stream flows.
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs): Detailed schematics defining piping, equipment, and instrumentation for process control.
