Position Overview: As a
Process Metallurgist you will be responsible for managing and performing the day-to-day operations of the metallurgical and sand labs for Vulcan Metals Tacoma foundry, including the coordination of the casting conformance testing process. This position works closely with all departments to support safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives. This role ensures efficient and timely performance of casting conformance testing and material evaluations while supporting high levels of data integrity. Due to DOD programs and specification requirements, this role requires US Citizenship.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical testing, chemical analysis, corrosion testing, and metallurgical analysis for casting conformance and welding qualifications
- Perform sand testing to support the mold/core/sand department
- Maintain lab equipment by performing preventative maintenance tasks and ordering consumables, to include calibrations and certifications
- Create recipes and specification codes in ERP to support estimating, contract services, and production teams
- Draft work instructions and procedures to support quality and production
- Collaborate with Molding, Melding, and Aftercast Supervisors for process improvement and cost reduction opportunities
- Coordinate casting conformance testing process through ThermoFisher SampleManager LIMS
- Support new product introductions by providing data analysis for material capability
- Support Quality by performing process surveillances and audits internally and externally
- Coordinate with Quality, Engineering, and Compliance teams to ensure suppliers meet requirements for material traceability, certifications, testing and documentation
- Other duties as assigned
Experience/Qualifications:- Experience working with welding or machined components, metal castings, or manufacturing preferred
- Working knowledge of machining, fabrication, and metalworking processes highly desirable
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering or Metallurgy, or related field preferred
Working Conditions and Travel: This position operates in a combination of office and manufacturing environments. Periodic travel (approximately <10%) may be required to visit suppliers, customers, and industry conferences across the United States and Canada.
