Product Designer (Creative Technologist)

Moth is a quantum software company building tools for creative industries. Movies, games, music, art, and beyond—we’re democratizing the awesome power of quantum computing by making it directly accessible to creators. Faster, cheaper, radder. Come help us build the future.

You might be a good fit if…

We’re looking for a graphic designer with sharp eyes for typography, information hierarchy, information pacing, layouts, and common interaction paradigms. (You might be in love with Jan Tschichold, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Saul Bass, Emmett McBain, Susan Kare, Edward Tufte, Muriel Cooper, and so on.) You might have strong opinions about paragraph measures, know the difference between tracking and kerning, and suspect base 12 is superior to base 10.

This role also requires the ability to code for the Web. Not Figma-pretend interactions. Actual code. (Using AI is fine—and encouraged—but you’d better know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript forwards and backwards.) Working knowledge of Nuxt and Vue is a plus. Python and basic shell scripting is also a plus. Knowledge of quantum SDKs will make you popular in conversation, but is not necessary for this particular role.

What you’ll do

  • Build useful, elegant interfaces: As a Product Designer you will work closely with Engineering and Research to shape the visual language and user experience of Moth’s core technologies. Our interfaces must translate complex processes into clear and coherent workflows for our users. We believe that simpler is smarter (and rightfully difficult to achieve).

  • Bridge design and development: As a Creative Technologist you won’t need to wait for frontend Engineers to translate and implement design ideas—you will implement them. The elimination of this sometimes cumbersome translation step will free you to fluidly act and iterate on minutiae that would otherwise escape notice or die on the vine.

  • Evolve our design system: You will maintain and extend a coherent design library across internal tools, demos, and experimental applications. You will ensure consistency across interfaces while allowing flexibility for exploration.

  • Iterate based on real usage: You will work with artists, creators, and technical users to gather feedback, test ideas, and refine our product surfaces.

  • Share your accruing wisdom: Through conversation and documentation, you will help disseminate design concepts and vocabulary to our colleagues. (Better design-educated colleagues make for better design collaborators. And cross-pollination is important to Moth’s culture.)

  • Keep peers in the process: Design cannot (and should not) exist secluded in an ivory tower. Your design work must be collaborative with your colleagues from outside the design discipline. (Remember: Our process isn’t a game of pitting aesthetic opinions, it’s about solving communication puzzles.) When we collaborate, we build better.

Your required abilities

  • Expert design skills: You have a solid grounding in traditional graphic design practices: typography, information hierarchy, information pacing, layouts, and common interaction paradigms. Bored on the subway, you can’t help but silently critique and mentally redesign the adverts because you simply cannot turn it off.

  • Systems thinking: You design for scale. Not content to build the widget, you feel compelled to build the widget factory. That could be corporate design systems, a collection of interface components, a textbook layout schema, etc.

  • Code fluency: You are confident working in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You can build and iterate on front-end code, create interactive prototypes and validate ideas directly in the browser. You understand how interfaces connect to APIs, data structures and technical constraints, and you design with those realities in mind.

  • Comfort with AI tools: You use AI as part of your workflow to explore, prototype and build. You understand how to direct and refine an agent’s output rather than rely on it blindly.

  • Empathy for audience: You can separate your own predilections and context from that of your audience; empathizing and anticipating their own needs as you entice them through an intended user journey.

Your potential bonus abilities

  • Familiarity with tools like Unreal Engine, Blender, TouchDesigner, or experience working in creative coding environments. You understand how artists and technical creators actually build and experiment.

  • Familiarity with Python and shell scripting.

  • Familiarity with quantum SDKs such as Qiskit.

Why you’re applying to Moth

You’re excited to put quantum-powered tools into creative hands. You’re intrigued by the flexibility (and intensity) of a tech startup. You’re inspired by fast-moving environments where ambiguity is normal and iteration is constant. You’re comfortable sketching, testing, refining, and shipping without waiting for perfect clarity. You’re craving a tight-knit culture of seriously smart folks / lunatics who are eager to act as your sounding board. You’re seeking the right context to do your career’s best work within.

Here at Moth we are terraforming the frontier of quantum creativity. Our roadmaps are ambitious. Our standards are high. Our thinking is rigorous. The frontier won’t terraform itself. Join us.
