Position Summary:

The Project Accountant plays a vital role in supporting project financial health by ensuring accurate job cost reporting, managing accounts receivable and payable processes, and maintaining alignment between EMJ’s ERP (Viewpoint) and project management software (Procore). This role supports Project Managers with financial inquiries, reconciliations, and reporting, and serves as a critical resource for internal teams, clients, and subcontractors. Based in Chattanooga, TN, this position is open to local candidates only and is integral to upholding financial accuracy and integrity across all phases of construction projects.

What You Will Be Doing In This Role:

Contract Management:

  • Set up project budgets in Viewpoint.
  • Ensure approved change orders are reflected accurately in contract values.
  • Resolve negative committed balances on subcontracts with Project Managers.
  • Partner with Contract Expeditors to resolve subcontractor compliance issues promptly.
  • Reconcile data between Viewpoint and Procore for financial accuracy.


Accounts Receivable:

  • Review Owner bills prepared by Project Managers for accuracy prior to ERP entry.
  • Prepare lien waivers and obtain signatures for monthly invoicing.
  • Update draw schedules for leadership review and monitor over/under billings.
  • Track project AR status and past-due receivables; maintain updated WIP information.
  • Ensure accurate AR reporting across financial statements and aging reports.

Accountants Payable:

  • Enter subcontractor invoices accurately and ensure timely payments.
  • Monitor Procore for invoice approvals and push to Viewpoint.
  • Review requisitions for lien waivers, joint check documentation, and financial accuracy.
  • Track financial status to ensure compliance and maintain project stability.
  • Batch and process subcontractor payments; update cash flow reports.
  • Respond to payment issues and coordinate reissues when needed.
  • Set up invoice approval workflows in Procore and Viewpoint.
  • Ensure compliance with state-specific nonresident subcontractor withholding laws.
  • Facilitate Viewpost setup for new subcontractors and guide project teams on payment methods.

Job Cost & Financial Reporting:

  • Support Project Managers with cost report preparation for Project Status Reviews (PSRs).
  • Respond to cost-related inquiries and process reallocations or budget adjustments.
  • Review financial reports for accuracy and attend PSRs as needed.

What You Will Be Doing In This Role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, or a minimum of 2 years of construction accounting experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel required); experience with Viewpoint and Procore is highly preferred
  • Solid understanding of accounting operations and construction finance procedures.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Confidence to challenge assumptions and focus on delivering results.
