Prompt Engineer

Description: Hybrid 4 onsite / 1 work from home in Greenwood Village, CO Our client seeks a Prompt Engineer to design, optimize, and maintain prompts that enable agentic AI assistants to reason, plan, and take actions across tools and workflows. The role focuses on multi-step reasoning, tool usage, and orchestration frameworks while partnering closely with engineering and product teams. You will evaluate agent performance, mitigate failure modes, and document reusable patterns to improve autonomy, accuracy, and efficiency. The work will support enterprise assistants and integrations across systems and APIs. Due to client requirements, applicants must be willing and able to work on a w2 basis. Rate: $65.00 to $75.00/hr. w2 Responsibilities: Design and refine prompts that enable agentic behaviors such as task decomposition, planning, tool usage, and decision-making. Track comments and user sentiments of agentic tools. Develop prompt strategies for multi-step, goal-oriented AI assistants operating across systems and APIs. Partner with AI/ML engineers and product teams to define agent roles, constraints, memory, and guardrails. Optimize prompts for agent orchestration frameworks including tool calling, function execution, and state management. Evaluate agent performance, identify failure modes such as loops, hallucinations, and incorrect actions, and implement mitigations. Support retrieval-augmented generation to ground agent decisions in trusted data sources. Conduct experimentation and A/B testing to improve agent accuracy, autonomy, and efficiency. Document reusable agent prompt patterns, workflows, and best practices. Collaborate on production deployments while balancing autonomy, cost, latency, and reliability. Experience Requirements: 4-5+ years of experience in data science, ML engineering, software engineering, or applied AI. Hands-on experience with large language models and prompt engineering techniques. Experience designing prompts for multi-step reasoning, planning, and tool-using agents. Strong Python skills for experimentation, evaluation, and integration. Familiarity with LLM APIs and agent frameworks. Ability to analyze agent outputs and improve behavior through prompt-level controls. Strong communication and documentation skills.
