Property and Evidence Control Technician

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work receiving and processing forms of property and evidence into storage or for dissemination, and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the departmental supervisor.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Receiving and processing property and evidence; obtaining appropriate authorizations; ordering various supplies and equipment; preparing and maintaining files and records.
The following functions are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

Maintains evidence and found property control files.
Receives, processes and stores evidence; maintains evidence in a secure manner and responsible for overall security of the evidence room and its contents.
Prepares and transmits items of evidence that require certified laboratory analysis to the State Bureau of Investigation and/or the Federal Bureau of Investigations Crime Laboratories.

Collects evidence as it is received from the lab; ensures appropriate authorities have proper paperwork from the lab.

Tracks evidence when checked in and out of the storage facility; ensures chain of custody. Signs evidence in and out for officers/investigators for court purposes.
Testifies as an evidence custodian expert in any type of court of law proceedings.
Reviews Evidence Forms to determine current evidentiary value; prepares and disseminates periodic disposition sheet for evidence tracking purposes.

Coordinates evidence reviews with the DA, defense attorneys and investigators.
Keeps informed of all regulations pertaining to evidence; conducts briefings for new personnel regarding evidence procedures.
Purges evidence and recovery in accordance with applicable laws by destroying, returning items to owner or submitting for auction.
Performs background check for weapon release (DCI)
Works with Purchasing and Warehouse Manager for auction sale of unclaimed property.
Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


General knowledge of procurement laws and regulations, sources of supply for vast array of goods and services, including local sources of supply and products available; thorough knowledge of procurement terms and a working knowledge of legal requirements regarding contracts; thorough knowledge of purchase order system; skill in the operation of general office machines and personal computers; ability to prepare written and oral reports; ability to prepare and maintain inventory records and logistics related files and records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and vendors.


Education and Experience


High school diploma or GED with coursework in logistics, or related field with certifications as indicated in the Special Requirements section and moderate experience in inventory management, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 6 months experience preferred.


Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to obtain certification in DCI 1, 2 and 3.

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently sitting and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires walking; work has no special vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office with typewriters and/or computer printers, light traffic).
