POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Office Manager, this is a more experienced Victim Advocate/Witness Coordinator position with the ability to perform job functions independently and provide leadership to new employees through job training and guidance. This position requires significant training and experience in the area of victim’s rights, as well as expertise in grant applications and grant reporting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs assigned duties with little or no oversight, such as maintaining communication with victims and assigned prosecutors, coordinating witness attendance at hearings, coordinating meetings between prosecutors and victims/witnesses, collecting and maintaining records of restitution and victim related documents, providing services and resources to victims of crime.
  • Implements updates/changes to informational pamphlets and letters provided to crime victims to ensure information is clear, up-to-date, and complies with the Crime Victim’s Rights Act.
  • Understands and is up-to-date on relevant restitution laws and is able to review files to determine which parties and/or victims are entitled to restitution. Obtains documentation from victims and third parties to determine restitution amounts. Communicates with the assigned prosecutor regarding the status of restitution.
  • Demonstrates expertise in the drafting of grant applications and grant reporting. Successful submission and reporting for grant requirements with little or no oversight.
  • Performs one-on-one training of the part time Victim Advocate and of new support staff employees on the job functions and responsibilities of the Victim Advocate/Witness Coordinator. Provides continual training to support staff and prosecutors on the legal requirements of the Crime Victim’s Rights statute.
  • Yearly reviews the office’s Policy and Procedure Manual for Victim Advocate/Witness Coordinator for updates and revisions. Identifies and implements process and workflow changes or improvements to make the office more efficient and effective. Updates Manual as necessary and appropriate throughout the year to reflect these changes.
  • Provides expertise relating to laws and best practices for compliance with the Victim’s Rights Act, such as assisting victims with applications to the state Crime Victim Compensation Fund and proactively reviewing files to ensure compliance with all applicable state laws and regulations.
  • Successfully fosters relationships and acts as liaison with local victim’s rights stakeholders, such as the WRC and the Michigan State Police Victim’s Rights Advocate.

Demonstrated expertise in the legal requirements of the Victim’s Rights Act and in the drafting of grant applications and grant reporting. Established and positive relationships with other local victim’s rights stakeholders. Expertise in the various computer programs utilized by the office, such as Adult Case Tracking, Juvenile Case Tracking, Karpel, AS400, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Completion of job-specific training through organizations such as the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM).

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Associates Degree in relevant field of study preferred or equivalent experience.

A minimum of three (3) years of legal clerical experience required with five (5) years preferred. This position requires the applicant to have completed the Victims Advocate Basic Annual Training and Annual Victim Advocate Conference. Extensive knowledge of grant applications and reporting, computer applications, keeping of court-related and other legal records, generating and processing legal orders and filing court documents. Must have knowledge of and familiarity with the Michigan Court system.
