Protection Engineer

Job Summary

Responsible for the design, configuration, testing, and commissioning of protection schemes in coordination with telecom and network systems. Ensures teleprotection, SCADA, and RTU interfaces meet operational requirements and network performance standards, with strict adherence to latency, jitter, and reliability requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Configure, test, and commission protection relays including ABB/Hitachi (RED 670, REL 670, RET 670, REC 670, REB 500), Siemens (7SJ, 7SA, 7SD, 7UT, 7UM, 7RW, 7SS, 7VK series), GE, Toshiba (GR200), and SEL models.
• Perform injection testing, logic verification, and function testing using standard relay testing equipment (Omicron, Doble, SVERKER, Megger.).
• Conduct simulation and fault testing for Line Differential, Distance, Transformer, and Busbar protection schemes.
• Verify CT/VT polarity, wiring integrity, and relay logic configurations.
• Prepare and execute FAT/SAT test procedures for protection panels and systems.
• Validate coordination and communication performance of teleprotection interfaces (C37.94, G.703, Ethernet-based).
• Review and update relay settings, logic diagrams, and scheme drawings.
• Collaborate with electrical and telecom engineers during integration and troubleshooting.
• Troubleshoot protection relay and communication issues in coordination with field teams.
• Prepare detailed test reports, relay configuration files, and as-built documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Protection Engineering, or related field.
• Strong knowledge of power protection schemes, teleprotection interfaces, SCADA/RTU communication, and substation automation.
• Hands-on experience configuring and testing relays from ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, GE, SEL, and Toshiba.
• Proficient in using secondary injection kits (Omicron, Doble, SVERKER, or equivalent).
• Familiarity with teleprotection interfaces and SCADA/RTU communication standards.
• Understanding of latency, jitter, and reliability requirements for critical protection services.
• UAE driving license is mandatory.

Experience:

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in protection engineering, relay configuration, and commissioning.
• Proven experience performing FAT, SAT, and site commissioning for protection panels.
• Practical experience in testing, simulation, and troubleshooting of relay operations and protection systems.
