Protection Engineer

Job Summary

The Protection Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, implementation, testing, and maintenance of electrical protection and control systems to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of power system assets. The role involves developing protection schemes, relay settings, and coordination studies for transmission, distribution, and/or generation facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop protection philosophies, single-line diagrams, and protection schemes for substations, feeders, transformers, generators, and transmission lines.
  • Perform protection coordination and fault level studies using industry-standard software.
  • Calculate and prepare relay settings for numerical and electromechanical protection relays.
  • Review and approve protection and control drawings, logic diagrams, and wiring schematics.
  • Prepare testing and commissioning procedures for protection relays and associated equipment.
  • Conduct or supervise factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), and commissioning activities.
  • Analyze test results and resolve protection system issues.
  • Provide technical support for protection-related incidents, fault investigations, and post-event analysis.
  • Review disturbance records, event logs, and oscillography to identify root causes.
  • Recommend corrective actions and system improvements.
  • Ensure protection systems comply with applicable standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI, NERC, local grid codes).
  • Support audits, regulatory compliance, and protection system documentation.
  • Promote safe working practices and adherence to company and industry safety standards.
  • Coordinate with planning, operations, SCADA, telecommunications, and construction teams.
  • Interface with utilities, consultants, vendors, and contractors.
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and project documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3 years of experience in power system protection engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of power system protection principles and relay coordination.
