Job Description

The Protection Services Officer I role at the Portland Art Museum is a member of the Protection Services team, which performs a critical role by protecting the safety of visitors, staff and Museum property. PSOI’s work in various locations throughout the Museum including the lobby, gallery spaces, special exhibits, gift shop/cafe areas and patrolling. This role will be cross trained to work in these different locations and helps adherence to the “Visitor Agreement to Safe & Inclusive Spaces”.

In this role, you will

  • Acts as the first responder to disruptive persons entering the lobbies and adjacent areas
  • Interacts with visitors in a welcoming manner by assisting with wayfinding and providing information related to the Museum collection, public programs, and events
  • Safeguard Museum assets, property, equipment, and facilitates against illegal and destructive acts
  • Communicate museum policies in a respectful manner using flexibility and discretion to achieve a safe and positive outcome
  • Customer service focus at all times
  • Maintain gallery capacity and oversees crowd control primarily during high traffic events and exhibitions
  • Resolve conflict using de-escalation techniques and upholding equity and inclusion values
  • Removes and tresspasses visitors if needed from the campus who exhibit harassment, discrimination, threatening or disrespectful behaviors
  • Communicating with law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical personnel
  • Initiating building evacuations
  • Communicates important notification functions via phone, email or 2 way radio
  • Document activity and write reports in a complete and concise manner (i.e. incident report, touch/pest log, and etc.)
  • Opening and closing the Museum
  • Gallery inspections
  • Responding to requests for assistance
  • Assisting with the training of newly hired security officers
  • Assisting with building evacuation procedures and sweeps during emergency situations

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Utilize radio for department communications and other technology such as computer, iPad, etc
  • Attend ongoing training and learning opportunities
  • Promote and support institutional equity and inclusion goals
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding the Museum’s proprietary information and operations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

To be successful in this role, you have these requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education required
  • Current Oregon Department of Public Standards Safety Training (DPSST) Unarmed certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
  • First Aid, CPR & AED training certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
  • 2 years prior security, law enforcement, military experience or in a related field
  • Approachable, customer service focused demeanor with a people-first value
  • Basic knowledge of security principles
  • Prior experience interacting with people suffering from mental illness and or under the influence of drugs/alcohol
  • Work collaboratively in an equitable and inclusive framework with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Comfortable dealing with conflict, de-escalation, and confrontation
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Basic operational knowledge of computer including word processing and email
  • Adhere to Security dress code and visibly represent the Museum
  • Strong problem solving skills

Job conditions & physical activities

  • Schedule/Hours: This position requires a 40-hour workweek with scheduled hours from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. The work schedule will be either Wednesday through Sunday or Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday. Hours may be slightly extended during Free Thursdays, Free Weekends, and special events. Candidates must be available to work weekends, holidays, and special events as required.
  • On-call rotation required
  • Overtime and weekends required
  • Works with emergency equipment including first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and AED devices
  • Interaction with potentially violent or hostile individuals
  • Exposure to blood and bodily fluids due to medical incidents
  • Occasionally lift/push/pull up to 50lbs in emergencies
  • Frequently ascends and descends stairs
  • Occasionally remains stationary for prolonged periods of time but in an emergency will require rapid movement through the Museum campus
  • Occasionally grasping and handling of objects such as pens, computer mouse, and radio
  • Frequently talking with colleagues and visitors
  • Occasionally operates a computer and other office equipment, such as a phone, i-Pad, and printer
  • Frequently listening and communicating to callers on the radio

  • This role is non-exempt/hourly and full-time
  • The budgeted compensation falls within pay grade D ($18.66 minimum - $21.41 midpoint - $24.16 maximum), based on experience.
  • Shift differentials (for hourly/non-exempt staff working onsite):
    • Evening hours (6:00 pm-12:00 am) will be paid an additional $1.00 per hour
    • Night hours (12:01 am-6:00 am) will be paid an additional $2.00 per hour
