Prototype Welder – Jigs & Fixtures (Fabrication / Automotive)
Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Prototype Welder to build, modify, and refine jigs and fixtures used in the production of automotive shipping racks and fabricated components. This role is ideal for a hands-on problem solver who can work from drawings or concepts, support prototype development, and ensure fixtures meet precision, durability, and production requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fabricate, assemble, and weld custom jigs and fixtures to support prototype and production builds
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD models to develop accurate fixtures
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to refine designs for manufacturability and efficiency
- Modify and repair existing jigs and fixtures based on production feedback or design changes
- Ensure all fixtures meet dimensional tolerances, quality standards, and functional requirements
- Perform layout, fit-up, tacking, and final welding using appropriate welding processes (primarily MIG)
- Set up and operate fabrication equipment including saws, drills, grinders, and other shop tools
- Assist in prototype builds and troubleshoot fit-up or alignment issues
- Maintain accurate documentation of fixture builds and revisions
- Ensure a clean, organized, and safe work environment; follow all safety procedures and PPE requirements
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance fixture design, durability, and efficiency
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a welder/fabricator, preferably in a prototype or custom fabrication environment
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Experience building jigs and fixtures for welding or assembly processes
- Proficiency in MIG welding; TIG welding experience is an asset
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple prototype projects simultaneously
- Problem-solving mindset with a focus on precision and efficiency
- Familiarity with measuring tools (tape, calipers, squares, etc.) and layout techniques
Preferred Assets:
- Experience in automotive or metal fabrication environments
- Basic understanding of CAD or fixture design concepts
- Forklift or overhead crane experience (as applicable)
This role is well-suited for a detail-oriented welder who enjoys building from concept to completion and plays a key role in supporting production success through high-quality tooling.
