JOB The City of Aiken is accepting applications for a casual / as-needed Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator to join our Public Safety Department.
This position serves as supplemental staffing support and is utilized to fill shifts when regular full-time employees are unavailable or when additional staffing is needed to meet operational demands. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Responds to fire, rescue, and medical first responder emergencies, including, but not limited to: vehicles, woods, grass, structures, miscellaneous fires, and medical emergencies

Operates fire truck, pump, and auxiliary equipment; participates in fire suppression in regards to exposure protection; obtains proper pressures on various fire attack hose lines; lays and connects hoses

Responds to provide aid and assistance to victims of automobile injury accidents; assists emergency personnel in treating and transporting victims of traffic and other accidents

Performs maintenance details around building and grounds; ensures that fire fighting/rescue equipment and apparatus are maintained in safe and proper working condition; refills air cylinders, loads hoses, folds tarps, cleans fire tools and equipment, etc.; performs preventive maintenance on fire fighting/rescue apparatus

Participates in scheduled and unscheduled fire safety, rescue, and medical first responder training as required

Prepares, processes, and/or transmits reports, time sheets, daily check sheets, etc.

Interacts professionally with victims, supervisors, public safety officers, general public, emergency services personnel, etc.

Reviews and studies layout of streets, roads, highways, fire hydrants, etc., within the fire service district and knows location of each; performs fire hydrant inspections; and performs fire and life safety surveys at commercial locations

Exercises safety precautions while driving emergency vehicles, performing maintenance details, and while on the scene of incidents where dangerous conditions may exist

Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with other City departments, outside vendors, and the general public contacted in the course of work; assists in resolving problems or complaints

Directs traffic at fire scenes, accidents, crime scenes, and at other times as needed

Conducts search and rescue operations for missing and overdue persons

Inspects, maintains, and cleans assigned uniform, and maintains personal hygiene in accordance with departmental policy and procedures

Researches and studies departmental policies and procedures, state and federal statutes, and maps to maintain awareness of current events and changes in procedures

Performs public relations activities; speaks to students, civic groups, and other community organizations regarding fire prevention, fire safety topics, and other related areas; gives tours of facilities

Assists other emergency response agencies in emergency situations

Remains on standby for dispatching duties on shift
