Position Title: Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Department: Youth Services

Reports To: Clinical Director


POSITION SUMMARY

Provides psychiatric services to patients facility-wide, as directed by the Clinical Director.

HOURS

Based on need/10 to 20 hours per week.

CATEGORIES OF DUTIES

1. Participates in the formulation and update of policies, procedures, and protocols for the NP role in collaboration with the Clinical Director and Psychiatrist.

2. In accordance with written protocols, performs comprehensive evaluations and assessments, including ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and examinations, furnishing medication, including psychotropic medications, and takes responsibility for such therapy.

3. Documents in the client’s record goals, interventions, and clinical outcomes, in sufficient detail that any psychiatrist can review and evaluate the effectiveness of the care being provided.

4. Consults with staff to make referrals to other mental health or health care providers as needed.

5. Identifies possible infections, report, and document as appropriate; initiate standard precautions if needed.

6. Administers waived tests (urine pregnancy test, blood glucose test, breath alcohol tester, UA drug screen, hemoglobin [HbA1c], COVID 19 and flu A+B tests, and fentanyl urine screen) and maintains annual waived testing requirements/trainings.

7. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • A Master’s degree in Nursing from an NLN accredited college or university with a specialty in Psychiatric/ Mental Health Nursing or completion of a Master’s level Nurse Practitioner program with a post-masters specialty certificate in psych/mental health nursing.
  • Completion of a State of California Board of Registered Nursing approved pharmacology course and minimum of 520 hours of psychiatrist-supervised experience in furnishing drugs and/or devices in not less than 6 months and not more than 12 months.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION

  • An active California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) license as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • An active California Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Certification
  • A Furnishing Number approved by the State of California Board of Registered Nursing, with advanced pharmacology courses and training.
  • A DEA Number issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (PL 4024 (B); H&S code 11056) for Schedule III through V controlled substances.
  • A National Provider Identification number (NPI)
  • An active CPR Certification
