Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Job DescriptionPosition Overview

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive mental health care, including psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, and treatment planning for individuals experiencing mental health disorders. The PMHNP works collaboratively with therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, patient-centered behavioral health services.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and mental health assessments.
  • Diagnose mental health disorders using DSM-5 criteria.
  • Assess patient risk, including suicide and safety assessments.

Medication Management

  • Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications.
  • Evaluate medication effectiveness and adjust treatment plans as needed.
  • Educate patients and families on medications, side effects, and treatment options. Treatment Planning
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs.
  • Coordinate care with therapists, primary care providers, and case managers.
  • Provide follow-up care and monitor patient progress.
  • Collaboration and Care Coordination
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team including therapists, PRP staff, and care coordinators.
  • Participate in case conferences and treatment planning meetings.
  • Coordinate referrals for therapy, community resources, and specialized services.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with state regulations, licensing requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Complete required treatment plans, progress notes, and medication management documentation.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Board Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner license in the state of practice.
  • DEA license and prescriptive authority (or ability to obtain).

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in community mental health or outpatient behavioral health settings.
  • Experience treating individuals with trauma, substance use disorders, or severe mental illness.
  • Familiarity with Medicaid populations and integrated behavioral health care.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology and psychiatric treatment.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Job Types: Part-time, Contract, PRN

Pay: $100.00 - $175.00 per hour
