Job description:

As a Staff Psychiatrist, you will provide comprehensive psychiatric services to incarcerated adults within the Correctional Facility, focusing on diagnosis, treatment, and medication management. You will be an integral member of an Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDT) that includes other psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and support staff. The role emphasizes advanced psychopharmacological skills, evidence-based care, and collaboration to promote rehabilitation and community reintegration. No insurance navigation or disability applications are required, allowing focus on direct clinical work. This is an onsite position with opportunities for professional growth in a secure environment protected by trained correctional officers.

The Correctional Facility seeks proactive, knowledgeable, California-licensed psychiatrists committed to social justice through mental health care. The Susanville location offers a rural Northern California setting with access to diverse geographic areas.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations, including initial assessments, diagnostic interviews, and ongoing monitoring of mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder).
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and psychotropic medication management.
  • Prescribe, monitor, and adjust medications; order and interpret laboratory tests; and provide consultations on complex cases.
  • Participate in IDT meetings to coordinate care, review patient progress, and address multidisciplinary needs.
  • Provide extensive psychiatric services or work in a review, evaluation, or consultative capacity, aligning with correctional regulations and professional standards.
  • Document all clinical activities in electronic health records, ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Consult with supervising psychiatrists on unusual, complex, or serious cases; present at clinical conferences as needed.
  • Support rehabilitative programs, including education and restorative justice initiatives.
  • May involve telehealth components or headquarters support, depending on assignment.

The role is primarily clinical, with no on-call duties unless voluntary, and emphasizes honing skills in a supportive team environment.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution; completion of an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency program.
  • Licensure/Certification:
  • Valid, unrestricted California medical license to practice as a psychiatrist.
  • Board certification in Psychiatry (preferred; board eligibility accepted).
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • Experience: Minimum 3+ years of experience as a psychiatry is required.
  • Skills: Strong diagnostic and psychopharmacological expertise; ability to work collaboratively in a high-security setting; cultural competence with underserved populations; proficiency in electronic medical records.
  • Other: Must pass a background check, including fingerprinting and TB testing; valid driver's license may be required for travel between units.
  • Desirable: Commitment to equity and rehabilitation; interest in teaching or mentoring (opportunities for involvement in training programs).

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $270.00 - $275.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hours shift
  • Day shift
  • Any one day between Monday and Friday
