Job Description:
The Illinois Central College, TRIO Upward Bound is a college preparatory program for college-bound high school students; grades 9th-12th. Upward Bound is seeking applicants to fill Instructor positions for our annual 6-week summer program; June 8th – 26th 2026, July 6th – 24th 2026. Selected applicants may start as soon as May 26th 2026, or as agreed upon to begin course planning and cover other administrative duties. Courses will be taught in-person at the Peoria Campus of Illinois Central College. Students take 4 courses each day between 9am - 3pm, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, Field Trips on Wednesdays, and 9am-12pm on Fridays for 6 weeks. Instructor schedules are negotiable. Course(s) approved to teach and course days & times will be determined between Instructor and TRIO Upward Bound Director. These are temporary, part-time positions.
Instructors may be hired to teach 1-3 classes in subject areas including but not limited to:
Foreign Language: Spanish or French
Fine or Performing Arts: Emotional/Physical Wellness, Dance, Art, Theater
Business: GPEAK, Entrepreneurship, Career Development, Life/Employment Soft Skills, Communications (Public Speaking/Debate)
STEM: Engineering, Computer Literacy, Robotics/Coding, Game Design/Animation, Medical/Health Careers/Forensics
SAT Prep: Math and/or Reading/Writing
Other: Psychology, Sociology, College Readiness
Compensation for the PT Instructor - Upward Bound (F) is $26.00 an hour.
Essential Functions:

Prepare 6-week course proposal, syllabus, lessons and generate list of supplies per course prior to the summer program.
Syllabus should include weekly course activities and learning objectives.
Record attendance and progress for each student; generate and submit weekly reports with this data.
Administer pre-tests, post-tests, evaluations, as appropriate.
Serve as a role model/mentor for Upward Bound students providing a motivating and safe environment.
Serve as content experts who can teach engagingly and patiently.
Maintain student confidentiality.
Each course should focus on one overachieving project or goal. For project-based courses, students may work in groups or individually on the class project and the projects will be presented at the end of the summer program.
Participate in Upward Bound end of summer celebration.
Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
An associate's degree or higher in a related field.
Experience working in a related field.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Experience working in TRIO.
Teaching Certification; through State of Illinois.
Teaching or volunteer experience with varied populations; first generation and/or low-income students.
Prior experience working with or teaching high school students.
Knowledge/experience with Google Suite and/or Teaching Online using Zoom.
