Part-Time Security Officer

Starting Pay: $22.79 per hour

Hours: 20 per week

Part-time benefits include: paid holidays, sick leave, personal business, and access to on-site wellness clinic.

Must be available to work all public service hours; which includes evenings and weekends.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Security Officer is responsible for performing general security duties, documenting unusual incidents, and ensuring the safety and security of the library and its patrons.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In cooperation with the Lead Security Officer and other colleagues, the Security Officer will advance the library’s mission, vision, strategic priorities, and brand. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Enforce the library’s rules of conduct for all patrons and visitors.
  • Patrol and monitor library facilities in order to identify, prevent, and respond to violations of the library’s Enforce rules of conduct, policies, and procedures.
  • Evaluate problems related to the security of library staff, volunteers, patrons, and property to take appropriate preventative and protective actions.
  • Explain rules, policies, and procedures to library visitors and solicit cooperation and compliance.
  • Investigate and handle disturbances and, as needed, obtain police and law enforcement assistance.
  • Perform crowd control duties for special events.
  • Periodically tour building and grounds, examining doors and windows to ensure they are secure and have not been tampered with.
  • Provide security presence at the library.
  • Provide Lead Security Officer and EVPL staff and Administration with details of incidents to assist with investigations and documentation of incidents.
  • Obtain, record, and maintain necessary documentation, records, and reports.
  • Operate security and property-related programs such as lost and found materials, building access controls, and surveillance activities.
  • Respond to medical emergencies.
  • Monitor security cameras and view security camera footage to ensure safe library operations.
  • Participate in special projects, or other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic:

  • 1+ years’ related experience performing similar duties in settings that (1) require highly visible and sensitive public contact, (2) require exercising conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, and (3) require the ability to respond appropriately to critical incidents in an occupational setting.
  • Must be able to exert up to 25 pounds of force regularly, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 200+ pounds of force occasionally to move and/or lift objects and/or restrain individuals as needed.
  • Must have the ability to use close, distance, and peripheral vision to implement strong observations skills to constantly assess surroundings and respond quickly to incidents as they arise.
  • Must possess excellent oral communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with staff and public.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.

Preferred:


  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or Security Management.
  • 1+ years’ experience in law enforcement or military service.
  • 1+ years’ experience in public library or retail security.
  • Possession of a valid First Aid & CPR certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This position requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 200 pounds of force. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, and lifting. Work frequently requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, and pushing or pulling. Work occasionally requires sitting. This position requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision, and peripheral vision. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communication and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving computer monitors and video surveillance, use of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities. This position may be exposed to individuals who are angry, hostile, or demanding and occasionally require the physical restraint of another individual. Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, inclement weather, and vehicle exhaust fumes. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
