PT Substitute Librarian

Salary: $22.67/hour

SUBSTITUTE LIBRARIAN (Part Time)

SUMMARY: The purpose of the substitute professional librarian position is to fill in when a regular librarian is unavailable or to help with special events. Substitutes may be asked to assist during any library open hours, including Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturdays as needed. Sometimes there is advance notice that a substitute will be needed, and the substitute can be scheduled in advance. Sometimes there is an unexpected absence and a substitute may be asked to come in if available. Hours will vary from zero to ten hours per week.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Help to staff the Children's and Adult Reference desks as needed.
• Assist librarians in preparing for and conducting library programs as needed.
• Assist in managing use of study rooms and Women's League Conference Room.
• Provide reference services and readers advisory assistance to all ages.
• Provide exemplary assistance and welcoming demeanor at various public service desks. A helpful and friendly attitude is required.
• Assist patrons in using the on-line catalog and accompany patrons to shelves to locate material.
• Other tasks as assigned.

SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision may be exercised over library assistants or volunteers. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director and full-time librarians. This position has no budget responsibility.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Good customer service skills and strong written and spoken communication skills.
• Broad knowledge of and keen interest in books and information.
• Strong computer skills and ability to assist patrons with computer use.
• Ability to work smoothly as part of a team.
• Physically able to shelve and retrieve books and other items on high or low shelves.
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds and to walk and stand in order to assist patrons.
• Maintain a welcoming demeanor with patrons, volunteers and staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited library school or enrolled in an MLS degree program preferred. Four year college degree with significant library experience will also be considered.
• Ability to speak and write in Spanish as well as English preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position is located in an office environment with little or no exposure to environmental conditions. Health and safety hazards are minimal. No protective equipment is required. Fine dexterity, handling and vision are constantly required. Frequently, walking, lifting, sitting, pushing/pulling, bending, hearing and talking are required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.
• Must successfully complete a background investigation.
