Primary Purpose of Organization Unit
The Office of University Communications and Marketing (UCM) at The University of North Carolina Pembroke is responsible for marketing the university to prospective students, alumni and other constituents, and for brand development and compliance. Additionally, UCM is charged with developing and communicating the university’s message through positive media and community relationships. UCM is also the functional division that houses Givens Performing Arts Center.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Digital and Social Media Coordinator will create meaningful storytelling and engaging digital content for university social channels, collaborate with colleagues to develop content based on marketing goals and strategic communication priorities, and plan, create and implement a university digital content strategy that enhances the university brand.
Job Description
The Social Media Coordinator leads the university’s social media strategy and oversees the day-to-day management of UNC Pembroke’s official social media channels. This position develops and executes platform-specific content strategies that strengthen brand awareness, support enrollment and engagement goals, and enhance the university’s digital presence. Responsibilities include content creation and curation, social media campaign management, analytics and performance reporting, trend monitoring, content calendar development, and coordination with campus partners to ensure consistent, strategic and brand-aligned messaging across university channels. The position also oversees the Student Creator program.
Management Preference
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Journalism, Mass Communication or a related field
- Self-starter with ability to take initiative
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Collaborative spirit and understanding of how to work with and delegate tasks to team members Experience managing social media platforms using tools such as Sprout Social or similar
- 1-2 years of experience in social media strategy, content creation and day-to-day platform management
- Experience using social media to promote a brand, nonprofit or educational institution across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok
- Proficiency in content creation tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, CapCut or similar, with an emphasis on video content
- Experience supervising, mentoring or coaching interns or student workers
- Passion for social media and a strong understanding of brand voice and reputation management
- Awareness of current trends, with the judgment to know when and how they align with an institutional brand
- Ability to navigate complex topics and support crisis communications, including identifying potential issues and escalating them appropriately.
