Dawson County Public Defender – Now Hiring!

Dawson County, Nebraska is seeking a full‑time Public Defender (no private practice permitted). This position represents indigent clients in criminal, juvenile, mental health, and child support matters as appointed by the Court. Responsibilities include client representation in court, case investigation, legal research, preparation of briefs and pleadings, negotiation with prosecutors, and management of office operations. The Public Defender also oversees staff and ensures compliance with county policies and Nebraska law.

Requirements:
– J.D. from an accredited law school
– Minimum 2 years of legal practice (criminal defense or related areas preferred)
– Member in good standing with the Nebraska State Bar
– Strong courtroom, research, and communication skills
– Ability to manage a busy caseload and work effectively with clients, courts, and staff

This is an exempt, full‑time position with a two‑year contractual term, renewable upon approval of the Dawson County Board.
