The Consulate General of Ireland in Los Angeles is looking for an experienced, highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking person with excellent communication, interpersonal and writing skills to fill the full-time position of Public Outreach and Consular Officer.

Position: Public Outreach and Consular Officer (Full-time, 40 hours a week);

Location: Consulate General of Ireland, 6300 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048;

Salary: $68,261 (with annual increments based on satisfactory performance);

Pension: Benefit from a Non-Contributory Pension Scheme (Terms and Conditions apply);

Paid Annual Leave: 20 days paid per annum, in addition to paid public holidays;

Health Insurance (medical): 80% contribution;

Main responsibilities:

This key role will involve, amongst other functions:

  • Managing, in consultation with the diplomatic staff, the Consulate’s public diplomacy and social media strategies;
  • Regularly updating and creating innovative content for official website and social media accounts on Consulate activities;
  • Designing, using Adobe or other software, event invitations and visual content;
  • Working with the Consulate team on delivering public diplomacy initiatives relating to e.g. politics, economics, consular assistance, diaspora engagement, culture and sport;
  • Assisting with coordinating events and visits including high-level visits and other related protocol functions;
  • Managing network of contacts, including maintenance of electronic database;
  • Consular services, including dealing with public enquiries as required; provision of consular advice to Irish citizens;
  • Other administrative functions related to the operation of the Consulate.

Essential/Key Requirements

  • Previous relevant experience, including professional experience of using social media platforms as part of a communications strategy;
  • The candidate must be fully fluent in English;
  • The candidate must demonstrate using work based examples of providing excellent interpersonal skills, being persuasive, working in a team but also dealing effectively with people in external organizations;
  • The candidate must have proven ability to build relationships and maintain a network of contacts across academic, funding agency, industry and public-sector communities;
  • The candidate must provide evidence of flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness showing strong organizational skills, attention to detail, able to work under pressure and to manage multiple tasks;
  • The candidate should provide examples of being solutions-oriented, and committed to delivering results, including by adapting approach if necessary;
  • The candidate must demonstrate using examples, their working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel); a familiarity with Adobe or other design software is desirable;
  • All applicants must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in the United States of America prior to hiring.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • A good understanding of the role of Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Consulate General of Ireland in Los Angeles;
  • A good understanding of local political, economic and cultural context;
  • Previous experience in a diplomatic mission is desirable, but not essential.

Terms and conditions of employment:

  • This is a full-time, office-based position. The role is an initial fixed-term 24-month contract, with a 6-month period of probation;
  • Hours of attendance will be Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with standard office hours from 09:00am to 5:00pm. The role requires occasional out of hours (weekend and evening) work;
  • The gross salary for this role is $68,261 per annum, with annual increments based on satisfactory performance. Salaries are paid direct to a bank account, therefore, the successful candidate must have a bank account;
  • The position will have an annual leave allowance of 20 days per annum plus public holidays, with leave in-lieu for occasional evening/weekend work;
  • The successful applicant will work alongside other local employees of the Consulate and will report directly to the diplomatic staff in the Mission;
  • A contribution will be provided towards the cost of private medical insurance;
  • Contracts are governed by US labour laws in accordance with US, State and Local Employment Law;
  • Please note that, where applicable, the Consulate does not withhold taxes at source. Therefore, the successful candidate is responsible for all taxes including social security contributions;
  • On request, successful candidates must be in a position to provide evidence of their compliance with applicable tax and social insurance obligations;
  • The successful candidates will be responsible for making their own arrangements regarding local transport and accommodation.

Selection Process:

  • Depending on the number of applications received, a short-listing of candidates for a competency-based interview may be undertaken based on the Essential/Key Requirements above.
  • It is foreseen that interviews will be held in early to mid-February 2026;
  • A skills test may be included in the recruitment process;
  • A second interview may be included in the recruitment process;
  • A panel may be set up depending on the calibre of candidates.

Security Clearance for Local Staff:

Police security clearance will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment.
