Public Outreach Coordinator
Position Summary
The Public Outreach Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing community outreach and education programs to inform and engage the public about mosquito control operations, disease prevention, and environmental stewardship. Serving as the primary face and voice of the District, this position plays a key role in representing mosquito control to the community, promoting public understanding of the district’s mission, and building positive relationships through effective communication, events, and media coordination.
Public Outreach Coordinator Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Develop and implement public outreach and education strategies to increase community awareness of mosquito control efforts and public health protection.
· Prepare and distribute educational materials, press releases, newsletters, and social media content.
· Coordinate and conduct presentations for schools, civic groups, homeowners associations, and community events.
· Serve as a liaison between the district and the public, local government agencies, media, and community organizations.
· Maintain and update the district’s website and social media platforms with timely and accurate information.
· Organize and attend public events, workshops, and training sessions to promote mosquito prevention and control awareness.
· Create informational campaigns for seasonal mosquito activity, disease outbreaks, and environmental issues.
· Assist with the preparation of educational displays, exhibits, and promotional materials.
· Respond to public inquiries and concerns in a professional and informative manner.
· Track outreach activities and provide reports and metrics on community engagement outcomes.
· Collaborate with operations and scientific staff to ensure technical accuracy in public communications.
· Assist with emergency communications during weather events or vector-borne disease incidents.
Administrative Duties
· Provide front desk coverage including greeting visitors and answering incoming phone calls in a courteous and professional manner.
· Process and route service requests received through phone, email, or in-person communications.
· Assist District personnel with general clerical and administrative tasks such as filing, data entry, and document preparation.
· Maintain office organization and support day-to-day administrative operations to ensure efficient workflow.
· Assist in preparing reports, including the annual report, and perform other duties as needed.
· Job responsibilities may be adjusted as necessary to support the smooth operation of the District business.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
· Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Environmental Science, Education, or a related field preferred.
· Two (2) years of experience in public relations, community outreach, or education; experience in public health or environmental programs preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
· Proficient in social media management and digital content creation, including video.
· Strong organizational and public speaking skills.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse team.
· Knowledge of mosquito biology, public health, or environmental programs (or willingness to learn).
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) preferred.
· Comfortable working outdoors or attending events in various environmental conditions.
· Valid Florida driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Work Environment
Work is performed in both office and outdoor field settings, exposing employees to inclement weather and traffic hazards. Employees are required to follow standard safety practices. A flexible schedule is required as occasional local, regional, and national travel may be required, to include occasional evening and/or weekend hours for community events.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

Pay: $19.79 - $28.90 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
