The City of Hampton is seeking a dedicated and experienced Public Safety Dispatcher Shift Supervisor to lead and support the vital operations of our Public Safety Communications Center. This role is responsible for supervising telecommunication personnel, ensuring efficient call handling and dispatching, and maintaining critical public safety services for our community.

As a Shift Supervisor, you will play a key role in overseeing daily operations, monitoring personnel performance, and ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of emergency information. We are looking for a strong leader with excellent communication and multitasking skills who thrives in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED.
  • Three (3) years' experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher preferred.
  • Must not have received any formal disciplinary action during previous year.
  • Must possess and maintain state and local certifications (i.e., CPR, EMD, and VCIN).
  • The incumbent will be required to successfully complete a Police Department background investigation to include a polygraph examination and pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.

Additional Requirements

  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Position may require working nights, weekends, holidays and extended shifts as required. Incumbents are required to work in situations of extreme stress and in emergency, life threatening situations.
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
  • Extensive knowledge of and proficiency in the use of personal computers; thorough knowledge of the city's geography; general knowledge of supervisory principles and practices; ability to speak clearly and distinctively over the radio; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to give clear, concise feedback; ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships and work effectively with diverse groups; ability to plan, organize, and assign work to others to provide appropriate coverage and efficient service; ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions.
  • Must be able to maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance. A sustained finding of untruthfulness at the conclusion of an internal investigation may result in immediate termination.
