Job Summary

Jefferson Township is a local government located in northeast Franklin County, serving an area of approximately 15.34 square miles with over 15,000 residents and 50+ businesses. The Township is known for its rural character, quiet atmosphere and abundance of open space. The majority of Jefferson Township is unincorporated, meaning that there is no affiliation with a city. The Township’s Public Service Department is responsible for maintaining over 57 miles of roads and rights-of-way, as well as the upkeep of five parks, five cemeteries, and various open spaces.

We are currently accepting applications for the position of Service Crew I. This is skilled work requiring the operation of various pickup trucks, dump trucks requiring a class B commercial driver’s license, large construction equipment, and hand operated equipment. Position is responsible, under the direction of the Service Foreman, for the maintenance, repair and upkeep of township roads and road right-of-ways, signage, equipment, stormwater systems, parks, cemeteries, buildings/grounds, and open spaces.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Performs road maintenance, including traffic control, pothole repair, berm maintenance, street sign installation, and tree trimming.
• Conducts stormwater maintenance, including reclaiming ditches, and repairing and replacing storm tiles and catch basins.
• Provides snow and ice removal services using vehicles that require a Class B CDL.
• Performs light building maintenance tasks.
• Handles groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and planting.
• Opens and closes grave plots for cemetery burials and cremations; frames and pours headstone foundations.
• Operates a variety of specialized equipment for road, building, and grounds maintenance, including dump trucks/snow plows, leaf mulching and wood chipping machines, chain saws, backhoe, tractor, and boom mower/zero-turn mower.
• Assists with the repair and maintenance of the department’s vehicle and equipment fleet, including daily inspections, cleaning, and fueling.

Qualifications and Skills

• A valid State of Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License is required.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Three years of experience in construction, maintenance, and public works system repair preferred.
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the materials, methods, and techniques used in road and grounds maintenance.
• Proficiency in operating vehicles and equipment, including dump trucks, snow plows, backhoe, tractor, zero-turn mowers, etc.
• Preferred experience in clearing snow and ice from roadways.
• Ability to perform a wide range of duties, often switching between tasks of varying nature and adjusting priorities quickly as needed.
• Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with Township staff, elected and appointed officials, and the general public.

Special Conditions

This position requires the successful completion of an initial and regular DOT physical, as well as a pre-employment drug screening. Additionally, an initial and annual department physical, including a 50-pound lift test, will be required.

Work Schedule

The primary work schedule is 7:00 am. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Irregular hours will also be required, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
