The Fresno County Department of Public Works and Planning invites applications for the position of Public Works Division Engineer. Incumbents plan, direct, and manage the work of a major engineering division and represent the Department of Public Works and Planning management in working with boards, commissions, other departments and agencies, architectural engineering consultants, contractors, and the public.

The current vacancy exists in the Design Division. The Design Division is responsible for the preparation of plans, specifications, and contract documents for various Public Works projects; traffic and transportation programs and studies; various public infrastructure facilities, consultant oversight, and handling the County's real property transactions. The division forms County Service Areas and Underground Utility Districts.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university that is acceptable within the United States accredited college or University system.
Experience: Five (5) years of full-time paid professional civil engineering work experience which includes at least two (2) years of supervision of professional staff in a Public Works setting.
Registration: Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a civil engineer issued by the State of California, Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent, may be required.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Pursuant to Fresno County Personnel Rule 4 - Selection Process, applicants may be required to complete an examination process and successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.

  • Tentative Exam Dates: April 30 - May 1, 2026
  • Tentative Interview Date: May 20, 2026

  • The eligible list for this recruitment may be extended up to 12 months, and may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions.
  • Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group II - Moderate Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require moderate physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) 10-25 pounds, and occasionally over 25 pounds. Generally, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved.
