Public Works Maintenance Technician

Position Summary

The City is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and motivated Public Works Employee to assist with the daily operation, repair, and maintenance of the City’s streets, water system, sewer system, stormwater system, parks, public grounds, buildings, equipment, and other municipal infrastructure.

This position is not limited to one trade or one type of work. Public Works employees are expected to help wherever they are needed. One day may involve filling potholes, mowing City property, or cleaning ditches. Another day may involve repairing a water main break, responding to a sewer backup, checking a well house, clearing a storm drain, or assisting with lift station issues.

The City needs employees with a strong work ethic, a can-do attitude, and a willingness to be part of improving the community. This is hands-on, real-world public service. When water, sewer, roads, stormwater, or City facilities fail, citizens depend on Public Works to respond.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Repair and maintain City streets, alleys, sidewalks, culverts, ditches, storm drains, signs, and other public infrastructure.
  • Fill potholes, perform patching, assist with street repairs, and help maintain gravel and paved surfaces.
  • Assist with water line repairs, water main breaks, service leaks, meter work, valve exercising, hydrant maintenance, and other water system needs.
  • Check and assist with the operation of City wells, well houses, generators, pumps, electrical controls, and related water system equipment.
  • Assist with sewer line maintenance, sewer backups, manhole inspections, sewer blockages, sewer repairs, and related collection system work.
  • Assist with lift station maintenance, pump issues, alarms, cleaning, troubleshooting, and emergency response.
  • Clean and maintain stormwater drains, culverts, ditches, and drainage areas before, during, and after storm events.
  • Mow, trim, clear brush, and maintain City parks, rights-of-way, ditches, public buildings, lots, and other City-owned properties.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, skid steers, backhoes, chainsaws, pumps, generators, compactors, sewer equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Assist with storm response, debris removal, flooding issues, downed limbs, blocked roads, and other emergency conditions.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs on City buildings, facilities, vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, storms, and emergency situations.
  • Follow safety procedures when working around traffic, utilities, equipment, confined spaces, trenches, chemicals, and hazardous conditions.
  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Public Works Supervisor or City Administrator.

Emergency Response and On-Call Expectations

This position requires the ability and willingness to respond after normal working hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and during severe weather or emergency situations.

Public Works is an essential service. If a water line breaks, a sewer backs up, a lift station fails, a storm drain is blocked, or citizens are without water or sewer service, the City must respond. Employees must understand that after-hours calls are a serious part of the job.

Overtime may be required and may occur with little notice.

Desired Qualities

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Dependable and willing to show up when needed.
  • Hardworking and self-motivated.
  • Willing to learn and willing to do different types of work.
  • Able to take initiative instead of waiting to be told every step.
  • Able to work as part of a small team.
  • Honest, respectful, and professional.
  • Calm under pressure during emergencies.
  • Proud of their work and interested in improving the community.
  • Willing to get dirty, work outside, and solve problems.
  • Committed to public service and helping make the City better.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to obtain required licenses or certifications as directed by the City.
  • CDL preferred, or ability to obtain a CDL within a timeframe established by the City.
  • Water or wastewater certification preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Experience with construction, maintenance, equipment operation, utilities, mowing, plumbing, mechanical work, or related labor preferred.
  • Ability to pass any required background check, drug screening, physical, or other pre-employment requirements.

Physical Requirements

This position requires physical labor. The employee must be able to:

  • Lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, shovel, dig, and use tools for extended periods.
  • Work in and around trenches, ditches, manholes, streets, storm drains, water lines, sewer lines, and uneven terrain.
  • Work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, mud, snow, storms, and other weather conditions.
  • Safely operate vehicles, equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Respond to emergencies at any time when required.

Work Environment

This position involves work in streets, rights-of-way, parks, City facilities, water and sewer infrastructure, stormwater areas, and other field conditions. The employee may be exposed to traffic, noise, chemicals, sewage, wastewater, confined spaces, heavy equipment, electrical hazards, weather, and other potentially hazardous conditions.

All work must be performed safely and in accordance with City policies, supervisor instructions, and applicable safety requirements.

Purpose of the Position

The purpose of this position is to help maintain and improve the basic services citizens rely on every day. Public Works is responsible for much of what keeps the City functioning, including water, sewer, streets, drainage, parks, and public property.

This job is for someone who wants to work, wants to learn, and wants to make a visible difference in the community.
