Public Works Maintenance Worker Join the Team That Keeps Solomon Running

The City of Solomon is seeking a dependable, motivated individual to join our Public Works Department. This position plays an important role in maintaining the City's water and sewer systems, streets, parks, facilities, and public spaces. If you enjoy working outdoors, operating equipment, solving problems, and making a visible impact in your community, this may be the opportunity for you. This is a full-time position working under the supervision of the Public Works Director. While experience in public works or utilities is preferred, we are willing to invest in the right candidate who demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, a solid work ethic, and a willingness to learn.

Residence Requirement: Employee must reside within 10 miles of Solomon.

What You'll Do

Utilities & Infrastructure Assist with the maintenance, repair, and installation of water and sewer infrastructure Help locate leaks and perform repairs Support system improvements and infrastructure projects Assist with testing, reporting, and compliance activities Maintain operational records and logs Learn state and federal requirements related to water and wastewater operations

Public Works Operations Perform street maintenance, patching, cleaning, and right-of-way upkeep Assist with mowing, trimming, and maintenance of parks and public spaces Participate in snow removal and ice control operations Maintain city facilities and grounds Assist with minor maintenance of city vehicles and equipment

Equipment Operation Operate trucks, loaders, mowers, and other public works equipment Safely use hand and power tools Follow established safety procedures Assist with routine equipment inspection and care

Community Support Interact professionally with residents, contractors, and visitors Respond to service requests and public concerns Assist with community projects and special events Support other city departments as needed

Emergency Response Respond to after-hours emergencies involving utilities, weather events, and other urgent situations Participate in emergency operations when needed

What We're Looking For

Required High school diploma or GED Valid driver's license Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments Strong work ethic and reliability

Preferred Experience in public works, construction, utilities, maintenance, or a related field Experience operating equipment and tools Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability Candidates with transferable skills and a willingness to learn are encouraged to apply.

Certifications & Training The City will support employees in obtaining required certifications. CDL required within 12 months of hire Water Operator Certification must begin within 6 months and be obtained within 1218 months of hire Wastewater Certification required within 24 months of hire Additional certifications may be required as job responsibilities evolve

Work Environment This position is primarily performed outdoors and includes exposure to: All weather conditions Heavy equipment and machinery Loud environments Confined spaces Hazardous materials associated with public utilities Evening, weekend, and emergency call-out work may occasionally be required.

Physical Requirements Lift and carry up to 100 pounds Bend, climb, kneel, and stand for extended periods Operate equipment and tools safely Physical Requirements (continued) Work on uneven terrain and in confined spaces

Schedule & Compensation Full-time position Typical schedule: 40 hours per week Overtime may be required during emergencies, seasonal operations, or special projects Compensation is based on qualifications, certifications, skills, and experience.
