Job Summary
The Mechanical QC Inspector (CSWIP 3.1) is responsible for ensuring that all mechanical and welding activities are performed in accordance with project specifications, approved procedures, client requirements, and applicable international codes and standards. The role involves inspection of fabrication, erection, installation, testing, and commissioning activities for piping, tanks, and structural components within oil and gas projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform visual and dimensional inspections of welding, piping, and mechanical works.
- Verify compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
- Inspect fit-up, joint preparation, alignment, welding parameters, and completed welds.
- Monitor welder qualifications and welding consumable control.
- Coordinate and witness NDT activities including RT, UT, MT, and PT inspections.
- Review NDT reports and ensure corrective actions are implemented for non-conformities.
- Conduct inspections during fabrication, erection, installation, hydrotesting, pressure testing, and mechanical completion activities.
- Verify material identification, traceability, heat numbers, and material test certificates (MTCs).
- Ensure inspection, measuring, and testing equipment are calibrated and within validity periods.
- Inspect surface preparation activities prior to coating application.
- Verify blast cleaning and surface preparation standards as per project specifications.
- Monitor environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, surface temperature, and dew point.
- Ensure coating materials are approved, properly stored, and within shelf-life limits.
- Witness paint mixing and verify compliance with manufacturer recommendations.
- Inspect coating application processes to ensure correct methods and procedures are followed.
- Measure and record Wet Film Thickness (WFT) and Dry Film Thickness (DFT).
- Conduct or witness coating tests such as adhesion testing, holiday testing, and other specified inspections.
- Perform final inspection of painted surfaces and verify compliance with acceptance criteria.
- Initiate the Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and report to QC Engineer for further review and validation of the same and follow up on corrective actions.
- Prepare daily inspection reports, punch lists, weld logs, and quality documentation.
- Coordinate with client representatives, third-party inspectors, construction teams, and subcontractors regarding quality matters.
- Participate in internal and external quality audits and support project quality objectives.
- Ensure compliance with HSE requirements and project quality standards.
Qualifications
- Diploma in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
- Valid CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector Certification (mandatory).
- Additional certifications such as ASNT Level II (UT, RT, MT, PT), BGAS, or NACE are advantageous.
- Minimum 3–5 years of QA/QC inspection experience in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Refinery, Pipeline, or EPC projects.
- Experience in onshore and offshore construction projects preferred.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, GMAW, SAW).
- Familiarity with international codes and standards including:
o ASME Section V, VIII, IX
o AWS D1.1
o ISO Standards
o ASTM Standards
- Ability to read and interpret:
o P&IDs
o Isometric drawings
o Fabrication drawings
o Weld maps
o Mechanical data sheets
- Knowledge of hydrotesting, pressure testing, PWHT, and mechanical completion activities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and QA/QC documentation systems.
