A Quality Engineer in CKD (Completely Knocked Down) operations is a specialized role focused on ensuring that all components meet stringent quality, safety, and documentation standards throughout the entire de-manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and final assembly process. This role is crucial in the automotive industry to prevent defects, reduce waste, and manage international compliance. Below is a comprehensive job description. Quality Engineer, CKD Operations Job Description

Job Title: Quality Engineer – CKD Operations

Location: Oragadam, auto manufacturing plant

Reports To: KAM, CKD Operations

Job Summary:
The CKD Quality Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring quality assurance protocols for all Completely Knocked Down components and processes. This role involves close collaboration with R&D, manufacturing, packaging, and logistics teams to ensure every component adheres to engineering specifications and international quality standards (e.g., IATF 16949, ISO 9001). The primary objective is to prevent defects at the source, mitigate risks during transit, and ensure a flawless final assembly process at destination plants. Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Process and Product Audits: Conduct routine inspections and audits of the disassembly, packaging lines, and incoming raw materials to ensure strict compliance with established quality standards and engineering specifications.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Develop, maintain, and manage all quality documentation, including inspection reports, test results, control plans, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Ensure all documentation is accurate for regulatory compliance and traceability.
  • Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis: Investigate internal and external quality issues (customer complaints, non-conformances, shipping damage) using problem-solving tools such as 8D, 5 Whys, and Fishbone Diagrams to determine the root cause and implement robust corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Supplier Quality Management: Work closely with external suppliers of components and packaging materials to establish quality requirements, conduct supplier audits, and monitor supplier performance through metrics like Parts Per Million (PPM) defect rates.
  • Packaging Quality Assurance: Collaborate with packaging engineers to validate packaging designs and loading procedures, ensuring components are protected during transit to prevent damage or non-conformance upon arrival at the assembly plant.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): Implement and monitor SPC methods to track key quality metrics, analyze data for trends and variations, and drive data-driven decisions for process improvements.
  • Continuous Improvement: Champion continuous improvement activities using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to reduce waste, optimize efficiency, and improve overall product quality within the CKD process.
  • Training and Support: Provide training and technical support to production staff, quality technicians, and cross-functional teams on quality standards, procedures, and the use of quality control tools.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, or Quality Engineering preferred).
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in a quality engineering or quality assurance role within a manufacturing environment, preferably in the automotive or a high-volume industry.
  • Technical Skills:
  • In-depth knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS) such as IATF 16949 or ISO 9001.
  • Proficiency in core quality tools: APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, and SPC.
  • Strong statistical analysis skills using software (e.g., Minitab, Excel).
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications (GD&T knowledge is a plus).
  • Soft Skills:
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work across diverse teams and with suppliers/customers.
  • A proactive mindset focused on defect prevention and continuous improvement.
