Quality Control Inspector
Steel Fabrication Shop
Position Summary
The Quality Control (QC) Inspector is responsible for ensuring all fabricated steel products meet project specifications, customer requirements, applicable codes, and company quality standards. This position works closely with shop personnel, project managers, welders, fitters, and field crews to verify quality throughout fabrication and before shipment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Quality Inspection
- Perform in-process and final inspections of fabricated structural and miscellaneous steel components.
- Verify dimensions, hole locations, fit-up, weld quality, camber, and assembly accuracy against approved shop drawings.
- Ensure materials match approved drawings, material test reports (MTRs), and project specifications.
- Inspect incoming materials for damage, correct grade, and compliance with purchase orders.
- Conduct visual weld inspections in accordance with applicable AWS standards.
- Verify proper weld sizes, lengths, locations, and welding procedures are being followed.
- Ensure fabricated assemblies meet customer and contract requirements before shipment.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain quality inspection records and reports.
- Track and document non-conformance reports (NCRs).
- Create punch lists and coordinate corrective actions with production personnel.
- Review shop drawings, erection drawings, specifications, and RFIs for quality requirements.
- Maintain weld logs, inspection reports, calibration records, and material traceability documentation.
- Assist with customer audits and third-party inspections.
Process Improvement
- Identify quality concerns and recommend corrective actions.
- Work with fabrication leads and supervisors to improve production quality and efficiency.
- Monitor recurring defects and implement preventative measures.
- Assist in developing and updating quality control procedures and checklists.
- Promote a culture of quality and continuous improvement throughout the shop.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with:
- AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel
- AISC Code of Standard Practice
- Project-specific quality requirements
- OSHA safety standards
- Company quality procedures
- Participate in safety meetings and maintain a safe work environment.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum 3 years of experience in structural steel fabrication, welding, or quality control.
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings and specifications.
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes including:
- Fitting
- Welding
- Cutting
- Drilling
- Assembly
- Knowledge of AWS welding symbols and inspection requirements.
- Proficient with tape measures, calipers, levels, squares, and inspection tools.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with production personnel.
Preferred
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- AISC quality management experience.
- NDT experience (MT, PT, UT, or VT certifications).
- Experience with structural steel, stairs, railings, miscellaneous metals, and heavy industrial fabrication.
- Familiarity with Tekla, SDS/2, FabTrol, Procore, or other fabrication software.
Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour
