Quality Control Technician - Fabrication and Weld

Job Purpose:

The Quality Control Fabrication/Weld Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the integrity and compliance of fabricated and welded components with established quality standards and specifications. This position involves inspecting welds, identifying defects, and collaborating with production teams to maintain high-quality processes. Our Quality Control Technicians work in a team environment. Work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm with overtime required and occasional Saturday.

Key Responsibilities:

Fabrication and Weld Inspection:

  • Conduct thorough inspections of components to ensure compliance with project specifications, drawings and industry standards using visual methods, gauges and other tooling.
  • Check in-process code vessels (hold point) for accuracy in a timely manner
  • Utilize various testing methods, such as dye penetrant and hydro and air testing
  • Ensure the accuracy of components by organizing and performing audits of parts before they move on to the next process
  • Communicate issues back to manufacturing. If a pattern of failures exists, help develop plans or processes to eliminate issues. Documentation of the resolution, plan or process change is required
  • Conduct inspections of raw materials, ensuring they meet specified standards and quality requirements
  • Verify material certifications and documentation for code compliance
  • Monitor and inspect fabrication processes, including cutting, welding, and assembly, to ensure adherence to approved procedures and quality standards
  • Identify and address issues during the fabrication process to prevent defects. Documentation required.
  • Perform precise measurements and dimensional inspections on fabricated components using appropriate tools and equipment
  • Ensure compliance with project drawings and specifications
  • Work with the Production Supervisor/Lead to coordinate AI Inspection visits
  • Inspect parts before shipment
  • All other duties as assigned

Documentation:

  • Maintain detailed records of inspection findings, including photographs and test results
  • Report issues to the leadership group
  • Generate comprehensive inspection reports and documentation for each project
  • Document nonconformance and assist with development plan to correct
  • Create and maintain inspection documentation
  • Review and sign off of code vessel documents and drawings from engineering
  • Material Requisition sign offs
  • Code vessel Process sheet
  • Issuing of Quality Alerts, SCARs

Code Compliance:

  • Ensure that all welding activities adhere to relevant codes, standards, and regulations
  • Stay updated on industry welding codes and standards to ensure continuous compliance
  • Thorough understanding of the inspection requirements of ASME Section VIII Division 1 and the BETA Quality Control Manual
  • Thorough understanding of the inspection requirements for welder qualification testing in ASME Section IX and the BETA Quality Control Manual

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with fabrication, welding personnel and production teams and/or supervisors to address identified issues promptly
  • Provide guidance on proper techniques and procedures to maintain quality standards
  • Work with vendors on discrepancies of bought parts

Defect Identification:

  • Identify and classify welding defects, document the nature and extent of each issue
  • Collaborate with relevant teams to determine the root cause of defects and implement corrective actions

Equipment Calibration:

  • Calibrate and maintain inspection equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results
  • Verify the calibration status of equipment before each inspection

Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance processes and quality control measures
  • Provide input for the development and refinement of procedures to optimize quality
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certifications in welding inspection are a plus
  • Must have proven experience as a weld inspector or similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of welding processes, codes, and standards (e.g., AWS, ASME)
  • Proficiency in various inspection techniques and tools, including their designs, and uses such as weld gauges, dial calipers, micrometers, tape measures
  • Strong attention to detail and proven analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with diverse teams
  • Must be able to pass the NDE exam and Eye Test

Working Conditions:

The role involves working in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment, requiring adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment. Bending, stooping, reaching, pulling, and lifting in excess of 75 pounds common.
