Position Summary

The Radiographic (X-Ray) Technician Helper supports certified NDT personnel in performing radiographic testing (RT) on welds and fabricated components, including pressure vessels. This entry-level role is designed for individuals starting a career in non-destructive testing (NDT), with a clear development path toward achieving Level II certification.

The Technician Helper works under direct supervision and is responsible for assisting with setup, safety compliance, and execution of radiographic inspections while gaining hands-on experience and formal training.

Key Responsibilities

1. Radiographic Testing Support:

  • Assist Level II or Level III RT Technicians in setting up radiographic inspection equipment.
  • Help position film, digital detectors, and radiation sources as directed.
  • Support the exposure process and teardown of radiographic setups.
  • Handle and maintain radiographic film and imaging equipment.

2. Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow all radiation safety procedures and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Establish and maintain controlled areas, including setting up barricades and warning signage.
  • Monitor restricted areas during exposures to ensure personnel safety.
  • Participate in radiation safety training and certification programs.

3. Equipment Handling and Maintenance:

  • Assist in routine maintenance and storage of RT equipment.
  • Ensure proper handling and transport of radioactive sources in accordance with regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas and darkroom or digital systems.

4. Documentation and Recordkeeping:

  • Assist with basic documentation of inspections and exposure logs.
  • Maintain accurate records as directed by supervising technician.

5. Training and Development:

  • Actively participate in on-the-job training programs for radiographic testing.
  • Work toward achieving Radiation Safety certification and NDT Level I and Level II qualifications.
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, ASTM).

6. General Shop Support:

  • Perform general shop duties as needed, including cleaning work areas, organizing tools and equipment, and assisting with routine shop maintenance.
  • Support production and quality teams with miscellaneous tasks to help maintain workflow and efficiency.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by supervision to support overall shop operations.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in fabrication, welding, or industrial environments is preferred but not required.

Certifications (Required/To Be Obtained):

  • Must be willing to obtain Radiation Safety certification.
  • Must be willing to pursue NDT Level I and Level II Radiographic Testing (RT) certifications within a defined timeframe.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to work with technical equipment.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and understand basic drawings and instructions is a plus.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
