Radiology In-charge

1. Radiation Safety Management

  • Ensure compliance with national and international radiation safety standards (such as AERB/ICRP/IAEA guidelines, depending on region).

2. Equipment Management and Quality Control

  • Supervise procurement, installation, and commissioning of radiology equipment (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, etc.).
  • Ensure preventive maintenance schedules and timely servicing/calibration of machines.
  • Verify equipment performance through periodic Quality Assurance (QA) tests.
  • Maintain equipment logs, safety certificates, and calibration reports.
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer and regulatory safety guidelines.

3. Administrative and Departmental Leadership

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Radiology Department.
  • Oversee staff scheduling, workload distribution, and workflow optimization.
  • Coordinate with radiologists, technologists, nurses, and hospital management.
  • Manage departmental budgets, procurement requests, and inventory of supplies.
  • Enforce departmental policies, SOPs, and safety protocols.
  • Handle documentation, reporting, and regulatory submissions.

4. Staff Training and Competency

  • Conduct regular training on:
  • Radiation safety
  • Emergency procedures
  • Safe handling of radiology equipment
  • Patient positioning and exposure minimization
  • Ensure all staff are certified and competent in their respective roles.
  • Organize continuous professional development programs.

5. Patient Safety and Care

  • Ensure proper patient identification, informed consent, and explanation of procedures.
  • Promote ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles to minimize radiation exposure.
  • Oversee safe practices for vulnerable groups (children, pregnant patients).
  • Ensure privacy, dignity, and comfort of patients during imaging procedures.

6. Regulatory Compliance and Reporting

  • Act as a primary liaison with regulatory bodies (AERB or equivalent).
  • Ensure all equipment and facilities are registered/licensed as required.
  • Prepare and submit mandatory compliance reports.
  • Report radiation incidents, equipment malfunctions, or workplace hazards.

7. Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and implement emergency response procedures for:
  • Radiation spills or leaks
  • Equipment failure
  • Fire or electrical hazards
  • Conduct periodic emergency drills and ensure availability of safety equipment.

8. Quality Improvement and Data Management

  • Monitor departmental performance indicators (turnaround time, repeat studies, QA metrics).
  • Implement corrective measures to reduce repeat exposures and improve imaging quality.
  • Maintain accurate databases of procedures, radiation doses, and patient records.
  • Participate in clinical audits and accreditation processes.

9. Communication and Coordination

  • Facilitate communication between radiology staff, referring clinicians, and hospital administration.
  • Provide expert advice on radiation safety matters.
  • Respond to queries and concerns from patients or staff regarding imaging procedures.

Desired Qualification & Skills

  • Education: Graduate/Postgraduate in Medical Imaging Technology + Postgraduate in Hospital Administration or Healthcare Management.
  • Experience: Proven experience and understanding of hospital Radiology & Imaging Services for 8+ years and should have minimum of 3 years of experience as Unit Head/In-charge - Radiology & Imaging Services.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills to engage with customers effectively.
  • CRM Proficiency: Familiarity with Hospital HIS tools.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyse data, identify trends, and work on strategies accordingly.

Skills in detail:

1. Technical and Clinical Skills

  • Strong understanding of radiation physics, radiobiology, and radiation protection principles.
  • Proficiency in operating radiology equipment (X-ray, CT, MRI, Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Ultrasound).
  • Knowledge of radiation dose optimization techniques and ALARA principles.
  • Familiarity with quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures.
  • Ability to interpret machine QA reports and identify performance issues.
  • Understanding of imaging protocols and workflow in diagnostic radiology.

2. Regulatory and Compliance Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of regional regulatory guidelines (AERB, ICRP, IAEA, NRC, etc.).
  • Ability to prepare and maintain regulatory documentation, safety reports, and compliance files.
  • Skilled in conducting radiation safety audits and risk assessments.
  • Expertise in ensuring equipment licensing, facility registration, and safety certifications.

  • Competency in radiation monitoring, incident investigation, and dose tracking.

  • Maintain and implement the Radiation Safety Program across the department.
