Job Description:
We are actively pursuing a Research Scientist II with a strong technical background to join our Research and Development Team in Munising, Michigan. This position reports to the Indafor segment of our Sustainable and Adhesives Solutions Team. The role will be responsible for new product development, formulation development and modification, experimental production trials, specification development, supplier relationships, production troubleshooting, and customer support activities. This role is focused on Indafor branded products, with the potential to support other Mativ brand areas as needed or desired.
Responsibilities:
Develop an in-depth understanding of all manufacturing equipment and processes to effectively manage new product development, cost reduction opportunities, and process optimization
Ensure R&D activities comply with corporate, state, and federal laws and regulations, including employee and product safety requirements
Create and control intellectual property
Conduct laboratory and machine trials to support new product development projects
Develop and execute trial plans, collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as Operations and Quality
Work with cross-functional teams internal and external to the organization, including customers
Determine and test Critical to Quality specifications for products and processes
Execute projects within the framework of the established Stage-Gate process
Generate technical reports with relevant data, conclusions, and recommendations
Travel up to 10 %, including local travel to outside service providers, customers, or internal mill locations
Qualifications:
Required
A bachelor’s degree in paper science, polymer science, or a related technical field of study
3+ years of experience required in paper or coating operations and/or product development
Must have solid Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel and Word
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
Capability to manage multiple tasks or projects at once within cross-functional teams
A demonstrated ability to effectively communicate internally and with customers and suppliers
Preferred
Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt
Saturation application or formulation experience
A desire to advance towards people and team management
