The City of York Fire Department is seeking motivated individuals with a strong sense of duty and a desire to serve with honor, pride, and dedication. No prior experience is required.

We are currently accepting applications for Recruit Firefighter positions. This is an excellent opportunity to begin a rewarding career in the fire service.

Employment Details

• Starting Salary: $39,091.97
• Post-Academy Salary: Up to $40,000 Upon successful completion of Academy
• Employment Type: Full-Time
• Recruit Academy Dates (Tentative): October 8th 2026 - December 4, 2026
• Shift Assignment: After a 2-week introductory period, recruits will be placed on a 24/48-hour shift schedule

Recruit Academy Overview

Recruits will attend an 8-week live-in Fire Academy hosted by the South Carolina Fire Academy (SCFA) in Columbia, SC. This program provides certification-level training and covers the following topics:

• Fire behavior and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Hose handling, fire suppression, and fire attack techniques
• Ventilation, salvage, and overhaul procedures
• CPR, First Aid, and Incident Command System (ICS)
• Hazardous Materials Operations
• Auto extrication, flammable liquids/gas fire control
• Firefighter survival and "Rescue the Rescuer" training
• Daily physical fitness and standard fire station duties

Certifications Earned

Upon successful completion of the academy, candidates will earn:

• IFSAC-Accredited Firefighter I & II certificates
• Eligibility for Pro-Board Firefighter I & II certification
• Hazardous Materials Operations qualification (with option to challenge for certification)

Housing and Meals

Recruits will be housed on-site at the Fire Academy and are expected to participate fully in station life, including standard housekeeping duties and scheduled activities.
