Role Summary
The HVAC/R Technician installs, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. This role supports reliable equipment performance, energy efficiency, product protection, and safe operations by diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, completing work orders accurately, and complying with all applicable safety and refrigerant-handling requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial or industrial HVAC/R systems, including condensing units, evaporators, compressors, air handlers, rooftop units, split systems, walk-in coolers/freezers, and associated controls.
- Perform preventive maintenance such as coil cleaning, filter replacement, belt adjustment, lubrication, electrical checks, leak detection, and system performance testing.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration issues using gauges, meters, schematics, control diagrams, and manufacturer specifications.
- Recover, evacuate, charge, and handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA requirements and company procedures.
- Install, replace, or retrofit HVAC/R components and systems, including motors, contactors, relays, valves, thermostats, controls, piping, and other related parts.
- Monitor and adjust temperatures, pressures, airflow, defrost cycles, and control settings to maintain proper operation and efficiency.
- Document inspections, repairs, parts usage, and maintenance activities accurately in work orders, logs, or computerized maintenance systems.
- Follow lockout/tagout, electrical safety, confined space, ladder, and other applicable safety procedures while working onsite.
- Coordinate with operations, contractors, and vendors as needed to complete repairs and support facility uptime.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong knowledge of HVAC/R principles, refrigeration cycles, heat transfer, electrical systems, motors, controls, and troubleshooting techniques.
- · Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, control schematics, service manuals, and technical specifications.
- · Skill in using diagnostic and service tools such as multimeters, manifold gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery machines, leak detectors, and hand tools.
- · Ability to identify root causes, prioritize repairs, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced onsite environment.
- · Working knowledge of preventive maintenance practices, safety standards, and refrigerant-handling requirements.
- · Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to internal stakeholders and vendors.
- · Strong organization, time management, and recordkeeping skills.
- · Basic computer proficiency for email, mobile work order systems, and maintenance documentation.
- Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical school, trade training, or HVAC/R apprenticeship preferred.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible HVAC/R technician experience in commercial, industrial, manufacturing, or facility maintenance environments preferred.
- EPA Section 608 certification required; Universal certification strongly preferred.
- Valid driver’s license may be required based on job duties and location.
- Additional credentials such as OSHA safety training, NATE certification, IIAR (ammonia refrigeration trade group) training or knowledge or equivalent technical certifications are a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Mobility: Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and working in tight or elevated spaces throughout the shift.
- Manual Dexterity: Must be able to use hands and fingers to operate tools, gauges, controls, and other service equipment.
- Speaking and Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in person and by phone and distinguish speech, alarms, and equipment sounds.
- Visual Acuity: Requires close, distance, color, and peripheral vision to inspect equipment, read gauges, interpret wiring diagrams, and perform detailed repairs safely.
- Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Environmental Exposure: Must be able to work in varying temperatures, mechanical rooms, rooftops, production areas, and other indoor or outdoor environments with exposure to noise, dust, humidity, and moving equipment.
- Physical: Ability to pass a medical exam for use of a PAPR or respirator.
Work Environment
- This position works onsite in commercial, industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, or facility settings.
- Require travel between buildings or work areas.
- Involves exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical systems, temperature extremes, heights, and noise.
- Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.
- Work environment subject to change based on duties performed.
