Refrigeration Mechanic

JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Refrigeration Mechanic/Technician

DEPARTMENT: Refrigeration (085)

REPORTS TO: Refrigeration Manager

FLSA: Non-exempt Hourly

Position Summary

Christopher Ranch stores, processes, packs and ships garlic out of its headquarters located in Gilroy California. These processes are all enabled by multiple teams of fabricators, electricians, mechanics and operators.

The primary duties of this position revolve around maintaining the proper operation and upkeep of ammonia and freon refrigeration systems.

Christopher Ranch is looking to recruit experienced Refrigeration Mechanics. We are also willing to consider candidates with a mechanical or electrical background, who have an interest in learning refrigeration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

· Complete regular daily, weekly and monthly inspections.

· Troubleshoot abnormalities within the refrigeration system; These issues range wildly in scope, but are most often related to mechanical refrigeration components or electrical control issues.

· Complete regular preventative maintenance services on evaporators, condensers, valves, electrical cabinets, safety resources and other related equipment.

· Seek out and report potential problems or safety hazards and actively participate in mitigation and repairs as required.

· Respond quickly and efficiently to reported breakdowns – on rare occasions this could also include responding during unscheduled hours.

· Maintain regular logs of equipment maintenance, repairs and inspections.

· Communicate often and clearly with teammates, vendors and department manager.

· Maintain company resources in a respectful and organized manner - clean workspaces, put away tools, maintain department resources and preform facility repairs as required.

Safety

Christopher Ranch places safety as its highest concern;

· Response Team: All refrigeration team members are required to participate as a member of the company’s emergency response team; this includes responding to emergency situations and participating in regular drills. Employees are required to complete assignments in a way that complies with government regulations and company policies, including; GMPS, OSHA, EPA, HIPPA…

· Communication: Report unsafe equipment or other hazards to management for repairs.

· Upkeep: Maintain safety resources, including; respirators, safety showers and fire prevention resources.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

To be successful in this position, a qualified candidate will have;

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Basic digital communication skills; smartphones, email and text messaging.
  • Proficiency with hand tools including; wrenches, drills, hammers, screwdrivers…
  • Experience troubleshooting basic electrical glitches.

Desired Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

  • Experience with ammonia refrigeration systems, preferably in an agricultural/production facility.
  • Experience with Freon Refrigeration Systems (In particular refrigerants R22, R407 and R512)
  • Technical Training Certification, or Degree
  • RETA or other Ammonia Refrigeration Certification
  • EPA 608 Universal Freon Certification

Reporting Conditions

  • Typical work weeks are Monday through Friday, eight hours a day.
  • Start times will be assigned within the range of 6:00am-8:00am.
  • Each mechanic is also required to work one Saturday a month for routine inspections.
  • Atypical work weeks can exist due to pre-scheduled projects or emergency conditions.
  • These circumstances can trigger mandatory overtime and weekend work.
  • Christopher Ranch will make a good faith effort to schedule all projects in advance and give ample notification. However, emergency conditions do arise. Employees are expected to make reasonable accommodations to be available for unscheduled and urgent situations.
  • As assigned, Mechanics can be asked to “cover alarms.”
  • This means being available during off-hours to respond to computer-generated alarm notifications.
  • This might also include either responding in person to the job site, or by dispatching a team-mate to the job site.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to plant environment to include moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and explosives. Safety Glasses must be worn at all times. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
