Position Summary
Assembles, installs, and repairs piping, fittings, fixtures, equipment and accessories in order to construct plumbing and HVAC systems, including refrigeration and medical gas systems.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
-
Cut and bore holes in structures such as bulkheads, decks, floors and walls and set sleeves as needed for such structural penetrations prior to piping installation.

Measure, cut, thread, bend and otherwise prepare pipe using hand and power tools or machines such as pipe cutters, pipe threading machines, pipe bending machines, groove machines, grinders, etc.

Lift pipe and attach it to structure, fixtures and equipment utilizing brackets, inserts, threaded rod, screws, bolts, clamps, welding equipment and other tools and methods.

Hang, mount, set or otherwise install plumbing and HVAC equipment.

Disassemble and remove piping systems and equipment when required.

Assist with installation of ductwork, other systems, or other tasks as needed.

Learning, developing skills and assisting more highly skilled mechanics with the following tasks.

Excavate ditches, grade and install pipe and backfill as required for installation of underground piping systems.

Assemble pipe, fittings, valves, etc. using appropriate fittings including but not limited to copper sweat, braze, press, PEX, cast iron, PVC glue, thread, flare, compression, mechanical joint, weld, groove, fuse-seal, polypropylene weld, and other specialty types as required.

Fill piping systems with proper medium such as water, compressed air, nitrogen, argon, etc. for testing purposes.

Detect and locate piping system leaks by observing pressure gauges and/or applying soap and water solutions to joints as needed and repair defective portions of system.

Modify, clean and maintain piping systems, support and related equipment as required by project contract documents.

Install, repair or replace fixtures such as showers, sinks, toilets, etc.

Assemble and mount, hang or otherwise install tanks, pumps, water heaters, boilers, air handling units, HVAC units, terminal units, chillers and other equipment and fixtures, and make final connections utilizing proper tools.

Operate equipment such as forklift, skid steer, boom lift, etc.

Develop basic understanding of the refrigerant cycle and refrigerant equipment and piping systems, and ability to install, test, evacuate and commission commercial and industrial Freon based refrigerant systems for HVAC applications (for refrigerant focused positions)

Develop basic understanding of medical gas equipment and systems and ability to work in medical environments to install, test and commission medical gas systems for hospitals, outpatient facilities, educational facilities, etc. (for medical gas focused positions)
Physical Requirements
-
Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
-
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and frequently carry 40 lbs. unassisted.

Ability to lift tools, pipe and fixtures overhead.

Ability to work at heights including climbing on and working from ladders, scaffolding, stairs and manlifts.

Ability to stand for long periods of time as well as bend, crouch, kneel and work in small spaces.

Must be able to use hands to reach for, grasp and manipulate objects.
Education, Training, Licenses and/or Certifications

OSHA 10-Hour Certification required as a minimum, additional training may be required.
