Regional CDL-A Tractor Trailer Driver

We’re looking for a safe, qualified, and motivated CDL-A driver to join our Regional Driver team based out of the Syracuse, NY area. Our drivers are responsible for the delivery of food products loading out of Syracuse delivering to multiple locations and states throughout the Northeast region. This position is salaried and delivery locations are generally consistent to allow the driver to build a rapport with receivers.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reports to the Fleet Manager. Works closely with the terminal facility management team and dispatch team to safely and efficiently transport food products and general freight regionally across state lines and in accordance with a scheduled route by operating a commercial motor vehicle, performing vehicle inspections and basic maintenance, securing cargo, planning routes, maintaining detailed logs of hours and expenses, completing yard work, and complying with all federal, state, and company safety regulations. Responsible for communicating clearly and professionally with all employees, shippers, and receivers. Complies with all Company policies and provides an example of enthusiasm, persistence, integrity, and dependability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

WORK SCHEDULE

1. Attends regularly and on time to an established work schedule meeting shipper/receiver delivery requirements and Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) hour-of-service (HOS) regulations for CDL-A drivers, not to exceed 70 hours per 8-day cycle and requiring some/occasional nights over-the-road away from home to meet the needs of the organization.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

1. Completes all Company training programs within the required timeframe.

2. Safely operates tractor trailers with dry or reefer trailers, and/or tankers, to transport food products and other goods interstate on local and regional routes. This can include multiple loads in one day while ensuring DOT HOS regulations are being followed.

3. Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the truck and trailer daily, as well as inter-trip inspections when swapping equipment, recording any defects. Performs basic maintenance like cleaning and changing fluids. Ensures Company asset cleanliness, maintenance, and basic vehicle condition upkeep.

4. Secures cargo using appropriate equipment (straps, load bars, etc.) and ensures it remains safe during transport.

5. Completes routes as directed by the terminal facility management team and dispatch, adheres to delivery schedules, and follows all traffic laws and federal regulations, including all hours-of-service rules.

6. Unloads the shipment contents of a tanker when hauling tanker loads and ensures that the tanker meets all requirements for food grade cleanliness, including washing and drying the tanker regulating.

7. Completes yard work such as trailer moves, reefer fueling, and asset inspections as directed and in accordance with DOT HOS regulations.

8. Communicates effectively with dispatchers, customers, shippers, receivers, and other team members to coordinate deliveries and report any delays or problems immediately.

9. Maintains and submits to dispatch all route paperwork, including fuel receipts, lumper receipts, reimbursements, non-fuel receipts, bills of ladings, packing slips, scale tickets, etc. after each trip. Submits to dispatch all required information, including weekly odometer readings and any applicable reimbursements, for payroll each week.

10. Accurately tracks hours-of-service in accordance with DOT and FMCSA regulations using the electronic logging device (ELD) and reports any ELD errors or issues to dispatch immediately. Logs applicable pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip inspections in the ELD and inputs comments or annotation whenever an exempt status is used. Certifies logs no less than every three days with an active driving status or at the start of each shift.

11. Utilizes company provides fuel cards to purchase diesel, DEF, and other work-related items, maintaining receipts and requesting prior authorization for special purchases.

12. Informs dispatch of any equipment issues and assists in coordinating repairs when needed.

13. Follows the scheduled route and reports to dispatch any unexpected delays immediately,

14. Completes all required fields on bill of lading and shipment paperwork as required, notating in and out times when applicable.

15. Maintains in the tractor all required paperwork for DOT inspection including but not limited to CDL license, DOT medical card, tractor and trailer registrations, tractor insurance card, all required state and equipment permits, ELD paperwork and instructions, applicable shipment paperwork and/or scale tickets, and a paper logbook for use in the event of an ELD malfunction.

16. Obeys all federal and state traffic laws, hour-or-service regulations, and posted speed limits.

17. Reports any and all tickets, warnings, inspections, incident, and accidents to dispatch as soon as possible on the day of occurrence, including any that occur during time off.

18. Coordinates with dispatch to ensure DOT annual inspections and all other required repairs or maintenance for assigned units are completed prior to the expiration date.

19. Maintain personal DOT compliance items including renewing CDL license, DOT physical, and self-certification of DOT medical card.

20. Understands that drivers represent the Company and maintains a professional demeanor when interacting when customers, shippers, receivers, and other employees.

21. Adheres to Company policies and procedures, communicating concerns or questions to management.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Prolonged periods of sedentary work driving a commercial motor vehicle for up to 11 hours per day as well as periods of physical activity including climbing, bending, loading, and lifting. Must be capable of exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to move, carry, and/or lift objects such as chocks or landing gear.

2. Required to have hand-eye coordination as well as the ability to coordinate hands, arms, legs, and eyes to maintain fast reaction time on the roads. Must be able to use body to work, move or carry objects or materials. Tasks require repetitive motion of prolonged driving, as well as talking and hearing.

3. Tasks require sitting/driving for prolonged periods and walking, grasping, lifting, bending, climbing, balancing, stooping, pushing, pulling, or crouching occasionally for short periods. Must be capable of three-point contact while entering and exiting a commercial motor vehicle as well as the ability to open and close trailer doors, adjust tractor fifth wheel, and trailer landing gear. Must be capable of working in varying climates and road conditions.

4. Auditory and visual ability in accordance with federal regulations for safe operation of a CMV which require the ability to hear a forced whisper at 5 feet, as well as 20/40 vision in each eye with or without corrective lenses, a 70-degree field of vision and the ability to distinguish the colors of traffic lights.

5. Mental ability to read and understand route sheets, bills of lading, instructions, and DOT regulations, as well as the ability to identify and analyze complex logistical challenges and propose effective solutions. Performs tasks requiring independent knowledge of safely operating a commercial vehicle in accordance with training and the use of an ELD system in accordance with instructions provided. Must be capable of maintain focus for long hours and manage fatigue effectively. Must be able to do some mathematical calculations to confirm hours-of-service availability and compliance.

6. Required to remain abstinent from all controlled substances that impair the ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely and legally.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Preparation and Training:

Work requires a valid Class A CDL license, DOT physical/medical certification, and a substantial level of knowledge which is equivalent to that which would be acquired by completing an accredited CDL-A driver school program. Must have a thorough and complete understanding of FMCSA and DOT hour-of-service and safety regulations and be proficient in the use of various hours-of-service electronic logging device (ELD) systems.

2. Work Experience:

Two (2) or more years of experience operating a commercial motor vehicle with Class A CDL license for a DOT registered regional or OTR/dedicated motor carrier is required. A clean driving record, with a limited number of moving violations or accidents is also required, along with a negative controlled substance/drug test.

3. Analytical Ability:

Some level of analytical ability is required to follow GPS routing, assess fuel stops, manage ELD and/or paper logbook entries, as well as to problem solve logistical, route planning, and mechanical problems. Must have strong attention to detail and time-management skills. Must possess some interpersonal communication skills and organizational skills. Must be able to maintain confidentiality as it relates to blind shipments.

4. Independent Judgement and Consequences of Errors:

Work is performed independently, often over-the-road, under limited remote supervision or in accordance with general instruction but is completed with a significant level of independent judgment and action. Errors may result in significant safety risks, customer dissatisfaction, legal consequences, or loss of time, money, and/or lives.

5. Contact with Others:

A. Inside the company - Regular communications with terminal facility employees and dispatch.

B. Outside the company - Daily professional communication with external customer, shippers, receivers, and occasional communication with officers and inspectors.

WORK OF OTHERS

1. No responsibility for the work of others.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists with resolving minor mechanical issues as needed.

2. Participates in group and/or one-on-one driver training sessions and safety meetings.

3. Participates in the long-term development and maintenance of improved supply chain efficiency to reduce costs and enhance revenue.
