Founded in 2001, LEARN is a network of high-performing college preparatory, tuition-free public elementary and middle schools with the mission of providing children with the academic foundation and ambition to earn a college degree. There are 11 LEARN Schools serving over 4,000 students in grades PK-8 across Chicago, Waukegan, North Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

About the Opportunity
LEARN Charter Network is looking for hard-working and passionate professionals that are dedicated to transforming public education. The LEARN Charter School Network Resident Teaching Fellowship (RTF) is a pathway for recent college graduates and career changers aspiring to become teachers who are committed to expanding educational opportunities for LEARN scholars. The LEARN Resident Teaching Fellowship, in partnership with Relay Graduate School of Education, offers a unique opportunity to become LEARN teachers through a prestigious fellowship and graduate school program. During the two year fellowship, you will be hired to work full-time at LEARN as a Resident Teacher, where you will participate in a supportive preparation program, earn a teaching credential, and complete a master’s degree in just two years – all with a full salary, benefits, and subsidized tuition.

Resident Teaching Fellow: Year One
In year one, as a Resident Teacher, you will work with a Mentor Teacher who will help develop your skills, provide coaching, and support as you learn and grow as an educator. You will observe, learn, practice and perform proven teaching techniques that you can implement while you develop as a teacher at LEARN.

As a LEARN Resident Teaching Fellow, you will:
  • Build relationships with students, families, and the school community, participating in a powerful team to support outstanding academic achievement and student character development.
  • Co-teach and deliver one-on-one, small group, and whole group instruction.
  • Collaborate with your Mentor Teacher and Resident Advisor to plan, evaluate and improve mastery of instruction, culture building, and leadership skills.
  • Participate in Relay GSE classes and Resident Teacher observations and professional development, team planning and data analysis meetings, and informal learning and development opportunities, in support of constant growth.
  • Embrace school related responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Residency YEAR 2 Successful Outcomes:
Successful Completion Of Residency Program Leads To:
  • Illinois Professional Educator’s License
  • Lead Teaching Placement within the LEARN Charter School Network in Year 2
  • Masters of Arts in Teaching from Relay GSE at the end of Year 2 (subsidized tuition)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher, or conferred graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Pass all required state licensure exams, by the program start date
  • Commitment to LEARN for 2 Years after completing the program

Teachers will be working in a busy and active environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the Teacher will have to supervise all children at all times. Majority of work will be performed in a general classroom/school environment. May be asked to participate and attend organization sponsored events and meetings, such as field trips and network professional development.

Teachers may be lifting and carrying children and equipment, and may spend time sitting on the floor or child sized furniture. Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Required the ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Teachers will also be expected to clean and maintain classroom equipment and furniture. Will frequently physically move moderate distances indoors and outdoors throughout the community or building with children including climbing stairs. Physical demands require to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, walk around the classroom and kneel upwards of 60% of the day. In addition, walking up and down stairs several times a day. Must be able to lift, push and pull 15 to 40 pounds for short periods of time.
