Primary Purpose of Job
The Advance Practice Nurse (APN) is required to know the psychiatric, medical, and behavioral health history of the individual client. The primary function of this role is to provide psychiatric/mental health care, administer, score, and interpret evaluations and are authorized to prescribe medication. The APN will specialize in diagnosing and treating behavioral and thought disorders in the geriatric population. They must be able to use their knowledge on different factors including biological and psychological factors to devise a treatment plan that can reduce or eliminate presenting symptoms.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities:
- APNs are responsible for analyzing the clients’ mental health status.
- Administer, score, and interpret findings from psychometric testing.
- Provide education and training about the importance of medication compliance and how medication use should be reduced prior to any termination efforts.
- Ensure that all prescribed psychotropic medications are FDA approved for geriatric purposes.
- Ensure that all psychotropic medication dosages are kept within FDA guidelines.
- Describe and provide rationale for any deviation in psychotropic medication prescription and clearly document in the individual’s treatment records.
- Adjust medications dose to lowest potential dose where the psychotropic medication remains effective and side effects are minimized.
- Adhere to the regulatory monthly meetings with the client to review the psychotropic medication impact and continue the monthly requirement until a stable dosage and positive effect is reached.
- Upon stabilization of a participant’s psychotropic medication, the APN will schedule meetings “no less” than quarterly (every 3 months)
- Upon the discontinuation of psychotropic medication, the APN will gradually decrease medication to allow the client to adapt to physiological change. APN will adhere to following guideline and protocol except when health and safety are at risks are present.

Reports To: Director/ Executive Staff
Compensation: $100 - $125 Hourly
Availability Requirements: 100% Remote; 16 hours minimum a week.

Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in nursing and the required New Jersey State license with a psychiatric/mental health specialty.
- Licensed APN
- Full knowledge of the collaborative agreement describing the population of youth served.
- Demonstrated skill to resolve complex or emergent psychiatric decisions.
- Has the availability of an M.D. for consultation.
- Five (5) years’ experience in psychopharmacological intervention and diagnosis.
- Background in administering mental status examination and psychiatric evaluations.
- Skilled in the treatment planning process.
- Demonstrated experience in working with system partners (i.e. Hospitals and Outpatient Programs).
- Knowledge of computer-based data management programs, information systems, and medical records.
- Ability to communicate effectively, in verbal and written form, with medical, affiliates, geriatric client, family, physicians and collaborating system partners.
- Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
Job Specifications: Must be proficient in Windows and Microsoft Office software. It is required that staff must possess valid New Jersey Driver’s license and have access to a personal vehicle.
Working Conditions: Working environment is in a structured and nurturing home-like setting.
Physical Requirements: Position requires intermittent sitting and standing; position requires constant use of hands for computer keyboard and report writing. Position requires occasional lifting of up to 50lbs. Requires good visual and auditory acuity for monitoring and responding to group participation.
