RENTAL YARD ATTENDANT

The Yard Associate plays a critical role in daily operations by ensuring equipment is clean, functional, organized, and ready for rental. This position supports customers, mechanics, drivers, and office staff while maintaining a safe and professional yard environment.

This is a physically active, hands-on position working outdoors around construction equipment.

Key Responsibilities• Check Equipment In and Out

Verify equipment against rental contracts during pickup and return. Inspect for visible damage, missing parts, excessive wear, and cleanliness. Accurately document equipment condition, hours/mileage, and notify management of discrepancies before releasing or closing contracts.

• Inspect Equipment for Proper Operation

Perform operational checks including starting engines, testing controls, checking lights, verifying safety features, and confirming functionality before equipment goes out on rent. Identify and report mechanical issues immediately.

• Clean, Fuel, and Stage Equipment

Pressure wash equipment as needed, remove debris, clean operator stations, refill fuel and DEF (if applicable), and ensure equipment is presentable and rental-ready. Stage equipment in designated areas based on upcoming reservations.

• Assist Customers with Loading and Unloading

Safely load and unload equipment onto customer trailers. Provide clear hand signals and ensure proper tie-down points are identified. Maintain professional and helpful customer interaction at all times.

• Maintain Yard Organization and Cleanliness

Keep the yard orderly by returning equipment to designated storage areas, organizing attachments, maintaining clear drive lanes, and removing trash or debris. Ensure equipment is positioned safely and visibly for easy access.

• Perform Basic Preventative Maintenance

Complete routine checks such as inspecting fluid levels (engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant), checking tire pressure and wear, testing batteries, and greasing fittings when required. Document irregularities and notify service personnel.

• Identify and Report Equipment Needing Repair

Proactively recognize signs of wear, leaks, abnormal sounds, warning lights, or structural damage. Tag and remove unsafe equipment from service and communicate repair needs promptly.

• Support Drivers and Mechanics

Assist with loading delivery trucks, organizing service areas, retrieving tools or parts, and repositioning equipment as needed to keep operations running efficiently.

• Follow Safety Policies and Procedures

Adhere to company safety guidelines including PPE usage, safe equipment operation, traffic awareness in the yard, and OSHA-compliant practices. Promote a safety-first culture at all times.

Working Environment

This position primarily works outdoors in an active equipment rental yard environment. The role involves regular exposure to:

• Varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, wind, and humidity
• Construction equipment noise and moving machinery
• Dust, mud, gravel, and uneven surfaces
• Fuel, grease, hydraulic fluids, and cleaning solutions

The Yard Associate will spend the majority of the day on their feet, walking between equipment, climbing on and off machines, bending, lifting, and performing physical tasks.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety boots, gloves, and high-visibility apparel may be required. Safety procedures must be followed at all times.

This is a fast-paced, hands-on environment that requires strong situational awareness, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask during busy rental periods.

Qualifications

• Ability to lift 50+ lbs
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
• Basic mechanical aptitude
• Forklift experience preferred (training available)
• Valid driver’s license required
• Reliable transportation
• Strong work ethic and attention to detail

• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
