Accounting Specialist

Location: Portland, OR - In Office - Not a Remote Position

FT/PT Status: Full Time -Monday–Friday, Standard Business Hours

Salary: $26-27/hour – depending on experience

About the Role

United Salad Co., a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest produce industry, is seeking a confident and capable Accounting Specialist to participate in our Accounting Team’s daily activities. This is a hands-on role that will perform a broad range of accounting functions: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll support, and general Accounting tasks as assigned by management.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accounts Payable: Match, reconcile, and vouch vendor invoices with proper approvals, collaborate effectively with Operations on variances, detect and remedy errors, prepare weekly check runs, monitor Aging Reports, maintain compliance records and expiration dates, prepare month-end close reports. Strong attention to detail skills needed to review supporting documents, and strong organizational skills needed to track unresolved issues.
  • Accounts Receivable: Invoice customers with supporting documentation, track installment payments, communicate with customers about open balances, monitor unbilled sales order reports to ensure timely billing, prepare month-end close reports.
  • Payroll Support: this role will cross-train with our Payroll Lead to provide backup coverage for time-sensitive daily activities. This includes but is not limited to: New Hire onboarding and Off Cycle payroll payments.
  • General Accounting: Contribute to status meetings, be responsive to inquiries on aging and account standing, maintain detailed and timely supporting documentation, various reconciliations and troubleshooting, assist management with accounting related projects as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Clear and effective communicator – ability to communicate well with internal teammates, sales staff, operations, management, ownership, customers and vendors. Ability to establish and maintain constructive working relationships.
  • Ability to seamlessly switch gears between Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in business and personnel related information
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills in all aspects of role
  • Ability to effectively manage time, re-prioritize, meet deadlines, and multi-task on a routine basis.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to adhere to established procedures, as well as offer suggestions to improve productivity.
  • Experience with ERP systems (Produce Pro or AS400-style systems a plus).
  • Experience with in-house payroll processing software is a plus
  • Experience with the Freight and Trucking industry a plus


Experience/Educational Requirements

  • Bachelors or Associates degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or other relevant field
  • 3+ years of professional Accounting experience in Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable
  • 1+ years of professional Accounting experience in Payroll Processing with hands-on payroll software experience.
  • Above average 10-key and typing speed to meet high volume data entry
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically 365 - Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Intermediate level skillset of Microsoft Excel
  • Intermediate user of Adobe PDF, experience with version Adobe Pro DC a plus
    Scanning documents, combining documents, convert documents to PDF, markups and annotations, sharing documents for review and tracking comments, redacting sensitive information, etc
