Summary:
The Boston Herald is seeking a dedicated and tenacious crime and courts reporter to join our team. This crucial role involves covering the entire spectrum of the local judicial system, law enforcement agencies, and the impact of crime on the community. We are looking for a reporter who can break news quickly while also providing insightful, in-depth analysis and compelling human stories behind the headlines.
This is a Sunday through Thursday shift.
What you will do:
  • Coverage of major crimes as they play through the courts
  • Monitor police and court records, attend daily hearings and trials, and be ready to quickly and accurately report on breaking crime news and judicial decisions
  • Daily coverage of felony arrests and police blotter items
  • Develop and pursue original, high-impact stories related to law enforcement accountability, judicial trends, public safety issues, and systemic failures
  • Cultivate a strong network of confidential and on-the-record sources within police departments, prosecutor and public defender offices, and the judiciary
  • Utilize public records and data (e.g., crime statistics, court filings, financial disclosures) to identify trends and inform deeper investigative pieces
  • Produce clear, accurate, and engaging content for all platforms, including print, digital articles, live updates, and social media
  • Focus reporting on the broader social and community impact of crime and judicial decisions, moving beyond simple incident reports
  • Ensure all reporting is thoroughly fact-checked, adheres to strict legal standards (e.g., proper use of court records, libel avoidance), and upholds the highest ethical journalistic principles
What you will bring:
  • Professional reporting experience, with significant time covering complex crime, law enforcement, or court beats
  • WordPress and Google Suite
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Strong working knowledge of the criminal and civil justice systems, including an understanding of court procedures, open records laws, and FOIA requests
  • A persistent, skeptical, and determined approach to gathering information and holding institutions accountable
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills under pressure and tight deadlines
  • A knack for photo and video is a plus
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings or weekends, as required by court proceedings, breaking news, or law enforcement activity

Conditions of Employment:

  • Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
  • Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
