Reporter for Court Beat and Crime Reporting

Overview

Freelance part-time reporter needed for court beat and crime reporting in St. Johns County, Florida.

Local preferred by not required.

Assignment:

- Review court docket each week for compelling criminal/civil coverage

- Review crime reports/arrests from St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and City of St. Augustine Police Department

- Check in with editor each day to report findings

- Pitch stories to editor

- Research subjects/background for assigned coverage

- Write timely short or feature-length articles

Requirements:

- Journalism experience required

- Legal news reporting preferred

- Must be thorough and detail-oriented

- Knowledge and application of AP style

Submit two writing samples or a link to portfolio/published work with application.

Flat rate –

$50/per week for checking Monday - Friday court docket and crime reports

Story assignments (paid upon publication):

$25/per short write-up (200-550 words)

$50/per feature (550+ words)

Pay: $25.00 - $50.00 per day
