Job Summary:

The United Federation of Teachers Communications Department seeks a writer / copy editor skilled in multi-platform storytelling to write news stories, editorials and feature stories for the union’s bimonthly newspaper while also covering breaking news stories on deadline for the union website and social media channels. We are looking for a communications professional who has exemplary writing, copy editing and proofreading skills and has experience navigating a fast-paced editorial environment.

UFT Communications Department produces emails, newspaper articles, booklets, fliers, programs, brochures, ads, PowerPoint presentations, posters, social media graphics and a wide array of other print and digital material to promote events and initiatives, inform the union’s members about their rights and benefits and engage them in the union’s campaigns.

Candidates will need to create these materials and ensure that they are clear, accurate, concise and consistent with the union’s house style. A working knowledge of education, New York City politics and public policy and understanding of labor unions and their role in public education are a plus.

Private sector nurses, administrative law judges and family childcare providers also belong to our union. Our work covers a broad range of categories, including: member education and information; uplifting member voice and stories; and running full-scale campaigns across local, state and national levels to advocate for causes that are important to our union.

Responsibilities:

  • Write content for digital newsletters and email blasts, produce union resolutions and complete other writing tasks as needed.
  • Write clear and well-researched articles, editorials and feature stories for our union newspaper.
  • Conceptualize, strategize, write and/or copy event programs, brochures, fliers, booklets and other print and digital material.
  • Cover union events, including live social media reporting.
  • Write data-driven articles that include infographics or charts
  • Work outside regular work hours as assignments demand.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in reporting or non-profit communications, including, but not limited to daily news, digital journalism, mission-driven storytelling or other deadline-driven content production.
  • Comfortable handling multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and managing tight deadlines
  • Experience producing or managing various digital media assets, in addition to writing stories.

Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Have in-depth knowledge of public school systems and city politics.
  • Top-notch writing, editing and proofreading skills. Familiarity with AP style a plus.
  • A track record of copy editing a range of editorial materials generated by an organization.
  • Have experience making videos or podcasts.
  • Have professional experience writing short-form for social media and other digital platforms.
  • Have experience covering budgets and other data-driven stories.
  • Have experience ghost-writing columns and messages for organizational leaders.
  • Work well with others in a large and diverse organization.
