Resale Store Manager

The Horse Shelter is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for up to 100 horses at a time. Since 2000, we have worked to rehabilitate, train, and rehome abused, abandoned, and neglected horses throughout New Mexico, while providing lifelong sanctuary to those in need.

Our Resale Store in Santa Fe—featuring art, apparel, furniture, housewares, jewelry, and tack—plays a vital role in supporting our mission. We are seeking an experienced, dedicated, full-time Resale Store Manager to lead store operations and serve as an ambassador for The Horse Shelter.

Position Overview

The Store Manager oversees all aspects of daily retail operations, staff supervision, merchandising, and donor engagement. This role works closely with and reports to the Executive Director and plays a key role in supporting the organization’s financial sustainability and public presence.

Key Responsibilities

• Create attractive, inviting store displays and maintain overall cleanliness and organization
• Ensure timely responses to store emails and phone inquiries
• Process donations, including sorting, pricing, and tagging merchandise
• Track inventory needs and order supplies as necessary
• Coordinate donation pickups and estate sales
• Supervise and support sales associates and volunteers
• Develop and manage staff schedules
• List items on online marketplaces (e.g., Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace)
• Recruit, hire, and train new sales associates; engage and support volunteers
• Assist in developing procedures, safety protocols, and store policies
• Maintain and train staff on POS and inventory systems
• Coordinate and perform donation pickups, including organizing and managing storage units

Qualifications

• Passion for and commitment to The Horse Shelter’s mission
• Minimum 2+ years of retail management or supervisory experience (thrift/resale experience preferred)
• Strong customer service skills with an engaging, friendly demeanor
• Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently
• Experience with cash handling, accounting basics, and retail procedures
• Proficiency with POS systems, inventory management, and basic software (Word, Excel); strong online research skills
• Ability to lead a team, provide clear direction, and foster a positive, safe work environment
• Knowledge of general business practices and ability to maintain confidentiality
• Valid driver’s license with ability to pass MVR and background check (required to drive store van)
• Ability to lift 20 lbs regularly, 50 lbs frequently, and up to 75 lbs occasionally
