Research Scientist - Geoscience, Earth Science

Job Title:

Reports To: Co-Founder & CTO

Location: Remote (U.S.), preference for New Mexico residents

Schedule: Flexible, up to 40 hours per week

Company Overview: EnviTrace LLC is a science‑driven AI/ML technology company specializing in environmental, energy, and earth‑science applications. We develop advanced, science‑informed machine‑learning tools and cloud-based software that help clients analyze complex geologic and environmental data for use in geothermal exploration, geologic reservoir management, carbon sequestration, water and contaminant remediation, and other sustainability‑critical tasks. Founded in 2021 and based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, EnviTrace serves a growing market that intersects clean energy, environmental stewardship, and data-driven decision-making.

Position Overview: EnviTrace seeks a highly motivated Research Scientist to contribute to cutting-edge projects in AI, machine learning (ML), and geoscience data analysis. This role offers flexibility in work schedule while requiring full accountability for project deliverables, research, and operational support. The position is funded primarily through DOE SBIR research grants and requires compliance with federal timekeeping regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Research & Technical Responsibilities:

  • Develop, code, and apply advanced AI/ML methods and tools relevant to company projects.
  • Spearhead research initiatives in new AI/ML methods, software development, and applications.
  • Stay current with emerging scientific and commercial developments in areas critical to the company’s R&D and software & services offerings.
  • Mentor junior staff, interns, and data scientists in coding, methodology, and project execution.
  • Lead proposal development for funding opportunities from the government and other agencies.
  • Seek, explore, and engage commercial partners and customers for consulting projects and SaaS licensing.
  • Prepare high-quality project proposals, reports, presentations, figures, animations, maps, and research papers for peer-reviewed publication.
  • Utilize code management and collaboration tools (e.g., Git, Google Cloud Suite) effectively.
  • Accurately track time and effort in compliance with federal grant requirements using Gusto.

Business & Collaboration Responsibilities:

  • Expand professional network of collaborators, clients, and potential funding sources.
  • Promote and implement workflow improvements that enhance productivity, efficiency, and revenue generation.
  • Lead projects and tasks, contributing strategically to the company vision and culture.
  • Engage proactively in customer interactions and company team meetings.
  • Assist in broader company operations, including grant writing, webpage and marketing materials development, customer outreach/support, and strategic planning.

General Responsibilities:

  • Carry out tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or manager, consistent with the role’s objectives and scope.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and standards, including safety, security, and operational guidelines.

  • Support team objectives by collaborating effectively and performing duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in relevant fields (e.g., computer science, geoscience, data science), minimum 4 years in field.
  • Strong expertise in AI, machine learning, software development, algorithm design, and coding best practices.
  • Experience in proposal development and securing funding is advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications and technical presentations at leading science conferences is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strategic thinking, self-motivation, and problem-solving aptitude.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $110,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
