The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Department of Genetics and Development is looking to hire a Research Study Assistant to work in the laboratory of Dr. Shirasu-Hiza. The candidate will be research support staff for the Principal Investigator and other lab investigators, as needed. This is a one-year position, with possibility of extending to two years if funding allows.

Responsibilities

Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Drosophila stock-changing; Drosophila husbandry and genetics; general research support, including preparing solutions, autoclaving, dishwashing, and maintaining lab safety.
  • Equipment maintenance and lab cleaning to ensure compliance to all regulatory requirements; ordering and reconciling; maintenance of data backup; training of personnel in the use of equipment and research technologies.
  • 50% maintenance of Drosophila stocks and general fly husbandry.
  • 50% general research support, including ordering lab supplies, maintaining equipment, and maintaining lab safety.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills; high level of organization; attention to detail; time management skills; motivation and dedication to research work; proficiency in working with computers, standard office and lab software, databases; ability to work in a highly independent and self-directed manner as well as in a team environment.
  • Experience with Drosophila husbandry and genetics, as well as experience with managing a medium-sized Drosophila stock collection.
  • The ideal candidate will also have experience with thin-layer chromatography for lipid measurements.
